I wonder if anyone can help, trying to upgrade my son's old pc for just another year or so. In the manual it says that the maximum memory for this board is 1gb, he has both DDR and SDram slots of which I can use only one. I would like to raise the memory from his current 2x256mb DDR PC2100 memory to 1gb.

Question is can I use a single 1gb chip of DDR or do I need to fit 2x512mb DDR

The M830 is identical to the ECS K7S5A, and that one does run large DDR DIMMs no problem, at least in my experience it does. Updating to the latest BIOS before changing the RAM might be a good idea, although you may of course safely try with the BIOS it now has.

edit: Oh, and welcome to the forums!
