My monitor is acting really weird. It flickers periodically, but not like a flicker from light to dark, but more like a re-sizing of the screen. It will get little smaller or a little larger, or sometimes only parts of the screen will flicker. It only happens after the computer has been on for a while, and doesn't go away until i've left the computer off for a while, so I'm thinking it's a heat problem. Could it be the video card (my video card is overclocked, but not by a lot)? Or is it my monitor? (the monitor is only a little more than a year old). How do I fix this??? HELP PLEASE!!

Check the refresh rates of your monitor and power managment settings.

Sometimes some monitors need some special settings on the power management control panel check it out.

I don't think it's that, I've had this monitor for a year or so and it's only started recently. I tried lowering the refresh rate, but it didn't change anything.

Do you have speakers or other similar electric stuff on the sides of the monitor? Some speakers are shielded and create "funny" effects when put near the monitor.

Oppss.. sory I meant "unshielded" not shielded... dumb me if they are shielded then it isn't the source of the problem...

try degausing your monitor is you have that option on its control panel.

Yes, I have a pair of magnetically shielded speakers near the monitor, I guess that's not such a good idea right?
But in that case why does the monitor only start acting strangely after time, and why did it only start now, since I've had the speakers and the monitor for a while?

Nope, I don't have a degausing option for the monitor.

try putting video card to normal speed see if it goes away, if it does try to install an extra fan to keep video card cooler.

I tried that, the card speed made no difference, I also tried installing diff. drivers, no difference.

Often monitors have automatic degaussing when you turn it on and off with the button,
rather than let it power up through the computer. You can't degauss by turning on and off several times rapidly... I think that there has to be a waiting period of 15-20 minutes? before the degausser will work again.

Not sure if the degaussing will solve your problem, however. I had some information about monitor problems and repair... will do a search and see if I can find the link again for you if this doesn't help.

I lost a monitor yesterday, that was only
14 mos. old. It started by doing the same things you described, then I compleatly
lost the picture. The first time I was able to get the picture back, yesterday, no joy http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

By the way, you can shut down your system without a working monitor by pressing:
windows button,U,S,(enter).

I'm betting it's....a mag monitor? It'd be crazy if it were a 15"er. Ok, you may not want to do this, but it will tell you once and for all whats up. Go out and buy a little can of freeze mist for electronics. Take the cover off the monitor. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING the looks "ominous" stay away from the tube and the guns and such, theres a whole lot of voltage there that can be deadly. We're looking at the circuit board part. Feel around on the chips with a fingertip when it starts doing it. One or more chips back there will be in virtual meltdown phase, and you will feel it. Spray the little *******(s) with some of that freeze mist, and I'm betting your problem will go away for a few minutes. Do this only as a last resort, but I'm pretty sure thats whats wrong. I had a 15" Mag do the same thing. I replaced the chips, did a little mod'ing and it works well again. You may want to take it to your local TV Repair guy, or electronics experts. (The High Schools have classes that can fix it for parts+slave labor money) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif At least you have an idea whats going on up there...look at it this way, monitors are going for cheap these days http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

http://plop.phys.cwru.edu/repairfaq/REPAIR/F_monfaq.html

That site's an old favorite of mine. Incidentally, what type of monitor is it?

Hmm. That site doesn't work any more.
Try http://www.repairfaq.org/ and find a mirror site from there. What you want is the Monitors FAQ.
