Ive signed up for adsl service, the provider tells me that i wont need to dial the connection and that it'll be always on, they're giving me alcatel speed touch home modem...i have 2 pc's that i want to share the internet with and i have been told to either purchase a switch and share the internet through that or just use 2 lan cards and a direct cable connection. I have not choosen the later option becuz ill hafta keep one pc as a server and one as client and the server i believe will have to be turned on always to be able to use internet on the client...i instead want to use the internet on both the pc's at any given time and that means that i dont want to turn the server on to access the client and thus i am told a switch will allow the solution for this. I am a noob wen it cums to networking but i do knw alot about hardware what i need to know is will the swicth allow for what i am trying to do? and can anyone of u tell me what is the best configuration software wise i should setup so that efficient sharing of connection badnwidth is achieved and that there is no loss of data from the modem to either pc...i have win xp professional sp2 on both the pc's and i would also like to access the printers and files on both the pc's but i feel dat there might be an issue since i have uninstalled qos and one other setting in the networking options dat i dnt rp/ip is left. HELP? oh btw will i need a specific sort of swicth or the normal ones used for lan connectivity im not lookin to go wireless :$
