I have my CD ROM and ZIP on eide sec. and they dont show on "my computer" unless I go thru the CMOS every time
I have tried every concievable combination including pulling and reinstalling the cables, it can't be cables as it works by going thru cmos. if I want the cdrom and zip to show I just stop at the cmos setup don't change a thing, don't even move off the date position just go esc, f10, save, yes, and it goes thru and they are there, shut down restart and are gone. am presently at auto, auto, auto, none and bios c,cdrom,a with this the above works.
I posted this question at MrC,s too figure the more minds the better, (share my pain http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif )

You might need a BIOS update for your board.
Also, in the BIOS have you set the option for PNP OS to 'yes' and is the option for secondary IDE 'enabled'?

does your bios have a delay setting for ide
initialise? Are the two jumpered correctly to
allow master with slave and slave?
Have you tryed reversing master/slave settings?

I noticed that your MB is the Soyo 5EMA. I had the same board, and there was a BIOS update for it to fix an IDE detection problem.

Im gaining on it, checked soyo only new upgrade has to do with IR which I don't have
my pri master now HD, pri slave cdrom, sec master zip. now on post, get "detecting sec master press f4 to skip". and stalls a bit then goes thru and every thing works, I can live with that http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I may try the press f4 as I rarely use the zip. except for backup. Many thanks to all for the help on this beast of a problem. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I looked at Soyo's website tonight and find that's odd that the only update available is the IR one. I looked further a bit to see if there was an archive, but didn't find any.
What revision of the board do you have?

not sure of revision number but think I have it working now, mrc's recomendation, now pri master HD, pri slave CD ROM, sec master zip drive, now on post, says some thing about seeking sec master f4 to skip. and stalls a bit, then finds it and goes thru and every thing works. can just hit f4 to speed it up. I rarely use the zip except to backup. this I can live with. thanks for all the help on this its been a bear http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Well, with my old Soyo board, I got all my updates and such off the Tiawanese site. No difference between that and any other. Anyway, I had a look foor your board and found this which is apparently a lot more informative than the Soyo site you went to as this one at least lists 3 different bios updates for 3 different 5EMA boards. So, here ya go. You may have to cut and paste that, dunno what it's going to look like until after I post.
http://www.soyo.com.tw/cgi-bin/prodinfo.exe?track=regular&board686=&bios=1&board586=5EMA+Family&board486=¬ebook=
Anyway, if that doesn't work, try http://www.soyo.com.tw
At the very least, you can see if there's anything newer for your board.
