Is there a setting to keep a backup hard drive from being accessed (spinning up)
until it is called upon? Like a CD. No use wearing it out for nothing. Just wondering. In XP Pro or Windows 2000 Pro.

Might try disabling it in Device Manager.

As long as it is plugged in, then it is getting power and spinning. Disabling it in Windows only stops you from using it immediately.
If you don't need the drive, buy a USB external enclosure, install the drive, then turn off the power switch when not needed.

I'll have to wire a switch on the side of the case. :D
Like Sterling has said, if it has power it will spin.

If I put a switch(off/on) on the drive power cable, I can kill the power. :D
Not that I am going to, but I was just wondering.

I wouldn't. It is much safer to get an external enclosure and turn the drive off that way.
What are you so concerned about? Hard drives are throw away items now. Tiger Direct had a 400GB drive for $65 last week.

I wouldn't wish a JM upgrade on even my worst enemies. They could hurt themselves.
