don't know what i've done, but when i try to start some programs i get a message come up saying. error starting program.a required mfc42.dll was not found.
some of the programs that will not start is icq, nuts &bolts and microsoft backup.
i have run system file checker and restored what i could from windows 98 cd, but it did not help, i used find to see if there was a file mfc42.dll on the pc, which there is!
but what has happened? and what can i do?

Sundance,

Where was the dll file located in your system? (should be in the Windows/system/ folder)
What version# and size of the file do you have? You might try manually extracting that dll file and manually placing in that folder.
you might try uninstalling one of the programs that use that file and then reinstall that program and see if it places that file back into use.

i took out nuts/bolts
then reinstalled it.
and hey presto all programs appear to be ok now. (touch wood)
