When trying to boot with CD ROM support with my Windows setup disks tonight, I encountered complete lock ups when the disk would scan the system.

CD ROM drivers loaded...
PCI Bus Scan completed...
ASPI Mgr for DOS completed...then,
Scanning PCI Bus Using Mechanism #2...

That's where the system locked, with the floppy LED still lit. Nothing to do except hit reset.

Up until now, I have never seen the Mechanism #2 message, but tonight I received the message whether I used WIN98SE, WIN98, or WIN95 boot disks.

I'm running PA2013, AMD K6400 @ 450, 64M PC100 RAM, Promise ATA66 card w/ IBM ATA66 HD.

I'm thinking it is the ATA66 Card w/HD that it was scanning for.

Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Susan, I just had the very same thing happen to me the other day. The disks have always booted fine and still will *without* CD support. I have a Promise Ultra66 and assume that may be the problem.

Anyway, I remedied it by editing the config.sys file that is on the rescue disk. I remmed out these lines by placing a ; at the beginning of each and it works fine now.

device=btcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
device=aspi2dos.sys
device=aspi8dos.sys
device=aspi4dos.sys
device=aspi8u2.sys

Let me know if it works for you.

Thanks a bunch, Wonder. That works great. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

One thing I noticed is that the disks don't do that particular scan when it's a fresh install of Windows - only after Windows is up and running and the drivers are installed. I did an FDisk, reformat and reinstall today and those same disks never scanned for Mechanism #2.

And here I thought that when I used a boot disk, it worked independently of Windows...
