2 are occupied with 256mb 1Rx16 PC2 3200U 333-12 DDR2 RAM
now HP said (its an HP by the way) i can ad up to 4gigs
i just want to add 1 gig, so 2 sticks of 512mb

the real irony is if you can't navigate the memory website, are you a good candidate for a DITY memory installation? Just wondering...good luck!

If you want all your memory to run at the same speed, you need PC-3200, also known as DDR-333. Different brands shouldn't matter, but going with the same brand, in this case Hynix, should help. If you get a higher speed of ram, i.e. PC-4200, it will be slowed down to the PC-3200 speed, which makes paying the extra money for it pretty much useless. It helps, but not enough to really make a huge difference. So to answer your question directly, YES, The Hynix 2x 515mb of PC-3200 DDR2 should work fine with the old ram you already have. So, if you want to keep your 2x256 ram in there, go with DDR2 PC-3200, because they match speeds. If you want to buy a faster ram like PC-4200, you should take out the old 2x256, because they run at the slower speed of PC-3200. The 4gb limit you keep referring to is the total ram you can add into the 4 slots on your board, so basically 1gb per slot. Your total ram with the 2x256 and the new 2x512 would only be 1.5gb, so you're fine in capacity standards.
