Geeez, how do you guys get so many viruses? I've never had one.
Maybe I should be wearing protection when I come to this board. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

OuTpaTienT,
I take it you're knocking on wood while you say that, 'cause I am when I say that, so far, I've been lucky too. Caution and paranoia has helped me by inspiring me to keep up on my virus updates and take precautions on opening mail.

One must look through ALL the options! It's all there - consult your NAV manual, or just click through every selection in Options you have to see what you can do.

Are there any exclusions that really need to be there?
Anybody take out all the exclusions and then have norton's start giving false alarms?
Thanks

Dave_H,
I removed them all and have had no problems, however, I saved a list of what was there and placed it in my Norton Directory for safe keeping just in case I need them later. I must note also that I don't have any Office 97 products on my machine, I use WordPerfect 2000 and like it better. I do wonder what the reasoning is behind placing the MS Office products there. Must be a conflict of some kind.
Best of luck in all,

I have a theory. (Only a theory.) Word & Excel 97 have an option in Tools/Options, General, to enable Macro Virus Protection. Maybe they conflict, or the NAV is set with theirs excluded if the Word/Excel option is checked. I don't know though.
I have NO exclusions in NAV. I also keep the Word/Excel Macro Virus Protection options unchecked. No problems, and NAV picked up a W95M (macro) virus about a year ago (brought home from work on a floppy).
I also check the NAV Exclusions listing every once in awhile just to make sure nothing gets stuck in there inadvertently. Sometimes that can happen depending on what option you choose when NAV is writing to a file. Like Continue, Exclude, Repair.

I just removed all my exclusions,
I didn't find any viruses by the number of files scanned went from approx 21,000
up to 47,842!
Thanks for the GREAT TIP http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I'll check before each scan now to make sure nothing sneeks into the exclusion list

I found these in the help setion of NAV.
Norton AntiVirus uses the entries in the Exclusions List in all scans it performs. An exclusion is a condition that would normally be detected, but you have told Norton AntiVirus not to check for a particular file.
If you move or rename a file, you automatically invalidate its exclusions. One exception exists: Include subfolders is checked and the file is moved without renaming.
To exclude files from being scanned for some virus symptoms:
1 Click Options in the Norton AntiVirus main window.
2 Click the Exclusions tab to bring it to the front.
3 Click New.
4 Do one of the following:
Use the browse button to display a file selection dialog box from which you can choose a file that will be displayed in the Item text box.
Enter a filename in the Item text box. You can use wildcards such as c:\ *.COM. You should check Include Subfolders if you want to ensure that all files with that extension are excluded.
5 Check any of the boxes in the Exclude From group box.
Before making your choices, click the right mouse button over any option to display a help menu. Click What's This? to see a description of the option.
6 Click OK to save settings and exit the dialog box.
You would choose to exclude a file only if you are certain that some of the virus-like activities Norton AntiVirus checks for are not indications of a virus, but are legitimate activities. Be careful! Excluding files reduces your level of protection.
Now why would I want to do this?
I had CLA,DOC,DOT,PPT,VI?,XL?<\CONFIG.SYS,POWERPNT.EXE,W INWORD.EXE,\RECYCLED\,EXEL.EXE. WHY????

Thanks,
I'll give it a try.
Was wondering because I got office 2000
and norton system works 2000, and everytime I
move a word doc. norton picks it up as a
shortcut error the next time I do the
windows doctor. Also, office 2000 puts tons
of entries into the registar that norton also consider errors.
I do have macros enabled, I'll turn that off since I don't really need that.
