Hello all, I got a Biostar 8500 tuc w/pent 166 free for giving a compusa customer advice while he was shopping for a new mobo at compusa.
The tech at compusa was going to sell him an atx mobo that needed 168pin ram even though the guy told him he planned to use all his old parts. I was next in line and was coveting those two 16m edo chips and pointed out that his new board needed 168pin ram. The tech was apologetic and sold him 128 m of pc 100, then I pointed out that the new mobo was atx....then advised him as to how much wattage his new power supply should be...
(note that this compusa is the one that wont hire me cause I dont have bench expiriance, or an A+ yet)
The guy was so aprecatative he gave me his old box! I pulled his cards out right there at the counter with customers lining up behind me http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
The board posts and will run if I reset the date and hdd parameters every time I reboot. the error msg says cmos battery low...I cant find a battery anywhere on the board? Will try resetting the jp10 jumper to clear cmos values and maybe flash the bios...why would it say battery low if it doesnt have a battery???
or am I overlooking something- anyone have one of these boards?

I haven't looked yet but it's possible the battery is in the real time clock chip.

Some older mobo's have a rectangular battery soldered on the mobo. There should be a brand name and voltage labeled on top of it.Others have a battery plugged into the mobo.Newer mobo's have a thick dime size disc that's clipped on the mobo....Hope you find it!...DawgTuff.

Thanks, my Gateway 486's have a Dallas Real Time clock, but they also have an external battery. My Fic mobos have the thick dime shaped battery.
My Biostar mobos dont seem to have either.
There is a rectangular chip next to the ami bios chip that says: ODIN OEC12C887A
could that be it?
Most of the rest of the chips I can identify as cache or intel pciset (guess those are the onboard ide controllers?) and the Via chipset.
There is a smaller UMC chip- um869f
but I dont think that's it...any ideas?
I'm gonna reset the cmos jumper when I put it back in the case, and see what that does.
