This is a strange one.
I have a ATX case, and a FIC VIA motherboard.
When i am not using the PC i shutdown windows, let the system switch itself off, and then i switch it off at the back of the p.s.u, so my monitor isn't on standby all day sucking electric.
Anyway, the problem i have is when i come to switch it all back on (the strangest part is it only does it if i leave it a long time, say a day or so). When i turn the p.s.u switch on, the fan cuts in, all the lights come on, but no boot.. when i press the power button, it boots and falls over with windows protection fault. I afto power on and off at the back a few times before i can get a normal boot.
Normal boot as in, i switch it on at the back, nothing happens, i press the power button, the fan cuts in, and boots just fine..
I have tried everything, removed hardware to narrow the problem down, but all i am left with is either the motherboard, p.s.u, or some weird inherited annoying bug...
Can anybody help ?
Any ideas.
Thanks.
Andy

Try turning off advanced power managenent
in windows and in your bios.

could be the battery going too. Had any problems with the time being wrong?

Yeh, tried all the power management stuff.
disabled it all, change the button to soft, hard power up. turned off all the network remote features and all the modem ring wake settings. Cmos battery is fine, no clock problems, or bios problems - upgraded the bios (checked with the supplier first), with no improvement.

Ever tried turning on the power supply
and letting it and your monitor "warm-up" for a few minutes before trying to boot?

Do you think this problem is getting worse?
like it's doing it more and more, or do you think it's random. (wish there was an easy way to check a power supply without changing it)

The problem i have is intermittent, it's random, seems to be more likely to occur the longer the unit is removed from a power source.
The problem occurs when i turn on the p.s.u switch. What should happen is nothing, until i press the power button... but what is happening is it turns the fan on, the lights, the hard drive light, the keyboard lights, but no p.o.s.t - when i do press the power button it starts up, then falls over, because of the power being triggered by something other than me pressing the power button switch initially... if the fan doesn't come on and the lights don't come on when i switch the p.s.u on, all is fine when i use the power switch..
It is a bit odd, and hard to explain...

normal is - i turn the p.s.u on, nothing should happen until i press power.

the fail is - i turn the p.s.u on, and everything but the m/b comes alive, then when i press the power button it boots up and falls over.
