I recently installed an inexpensive Delta 48x CD-ROM into a system for a friend of mine. It appears to work perfectly fine except when he tries to play Half-Life. When Half-Life is installed, it chugs, clicks and then seems to grind to an audible halt. I’ve tried other CD-ROM games and everything always works fine.
I’ve performed a visual comparison of the Half-Life disc, thinking maybe there was something wrong with the it’s physical dimensions, and it’s nearly identical in everyway to other working CD-ROM discs.
His system, with its old CD-ROM, ran this game just fine; I brought his CD home with me and tried it out on my system, it performs flawlessly.
Yes, I inspected his CD-ROM unit for bits of paper or other garbage that might have somehow gotten into the mechanism.
I’ve never encountered this problem before, it seems very strange, any clues?
