A parent asked almost in desperation. How can We eliminate/prevent MYSPACE on a computer? I know the child can go to another but they want to do something.
:( :(

Add the web site IP address (currently 216.178.32.48 which I got from pinging the dns name) to the local host file so it loops back to the local IP address of 127.0.0.1

Find the HOSTS file. it's in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc. Open it with Notepad and paste these lines in:

127.0.0.1 myspace.com
127.0.0.1 www.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 home.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 browseusers.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 search.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 invite.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 blog.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 favorites.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 forum.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 groups.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 events.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 vids.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 music.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 classifieds.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 profile.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 login.myspace.com

It's guaranteed to work.

How is this different from blocking it through a router? Which is what I'd prefer to do once I get off my lazy **** and find the disk for my router.

Why do you need a disk to edit the router? Did you disable the web admin function? I just open a browser and enter the IP address of the router then log in.

Why in God's name would you want to enter all of those URLs in a router setup when you can paste them at once in Notepad? That's a big *duh*.

Well that's why I asked, *duh*! Besides wouldn't that then block all that are connected to the router?
The reason is for the manual, I set it up so long ago I 'd have to look to make the changes.
And no , I didn't realize that all those URL's were needed. But now I do!

I have pasted all the URL's into the Hosts files and it works well. Thanks much.

A couple of other must-haves related to hosts files. These are the two I use:

MVPS.org (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)

Hoster (http://www.funkytoad.com/hoster.htm)

In conjunction with Spywareblaster and Firefox (with the NoScript and Adblock extensions, and the armslength of windows tweaks), my system scans with any utility such as Spybot, Adaware, etc. always turn up zilch. I can't believe the condition of some of the systems that people bring to me. The worst part is they actually do their banking on these. Makes you cringe!
