When trying to reinstall Win95 or upgrade to Win98, the system reports that there is an incompatible compression driver (i.e. doublespace/drivespace)present. I have
deleted the autoexec.bat & config.sys files
and thoroughly checked registry, win.ini, and
sys.ini, but can find no trace of the file in question. I have even formatted a new drive
and manually copied all files to it with same
results.

PROBLEM FIXED... DBLSPACE.BIN & .INI IN ROOT
DIRECTORY READ BY SYSTEM. I WAS LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACES. THANKS FOR THE REPLIES

Sometimes Drive Overlays can cause problems. Did this drive gave a drive overlay installed on it.

BTW, a overlay is what allows a system that has the 524mb limit or the 2.1gb limit to use a large hd.

I've seen that before, when I boot a PC with a newer version of win9x DOS. Usually only on WIN95A or older PC's (DOS 5.x, 6.x, etc.).

If you plan to wipe the drive anyways just fdisk and format the drive with a Win 95B or Win98 diskette and the error should go away.
