Hi, New user here to the forum and wanted to say hi and was hoping to get some help with an issue I am having. . The users of my company access a graphics server (GraphicsBlastServer139) on a daily basis but continually receive errors for mis-typing its name. What type of record should you add to the DNS database so that the GraphicsBlastServer139 can be accessed by the more easily remembered alternative name Graphics? This is on a win2000 network.

What are the steps required to add this record to the DNS server? I am greatful for any help.

thanks

Welcome to Sysopt bruinator.

Just create a new shorcut on the desktop. Right-click on the desktop and select New > Shortcut, type the URL (http://......) in the location field, click Next, enter a name for the shortcut and press Finish. To make it more accessible, right-click on the shortcut and drag it to the QuickLaunch bar.

Or.....you could just add it to your browser Favorites or Bookmarks.

you can add a cname (alias) record to your dns, but you need to focus on what the real problem is. don't make it harder than it has to be.

why do they have to type in the name? don't you have a mapped drive?

You don't add a record to the DNS database. You should create the shortcut as suggested and copy it to each users desktop.

You have no control to the DNS database at your ISPs headquarters.

Are you talking about accessing the internet or accessing a program installed on a Windows 2000 Server on a local domain?

accessing a program installed on a Windows 2000 Server on a local domain.

Hmm...well as long as you can browse to it, you can create a shortcut to it.

i don't see why you would consider messing with dns just to save some typing. once they have the shortcut, they shouldn't have to type the url again.
