Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : I/E 5 problem...I think

After disconnecting from my ISP, I put the PC in the "sleep" mode by clicking Start/Suspend. When I "wake" the unit and reconnect to my ISP, I cannot successfully launch I/E 5.
Internet Explorer is unable to locate my start page, NoWonder. Just above the Start button it usually says, "Connecting to site <A HREF="http://www.nowonder.com."" TARGET=_blank>www.nowonder.com."</A> Now it says, "Connecting to site 127.0.0.1." If I point it to any other site, the message is the same - it looks for 127.0.0.1.
The text on the page says, "Unable to display page." Near the bottom, it says, "Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer." At that point, I must reboot.
I spent 20 minutes on the phone yesterday with my ISP. He walked me through the different settings and everything was fine. He was able to ping me and me, him.
Since I am unable to uninstall I/E, I returned to my previous version, 4.0, but the same thing happened when I "woke" the box and launched the browser. The message read, "I/E cannot open the Internet site http://www.nowonder.com. A connection with the server could not be established."
I reloaded 5.0, but nothing has changed. Any ideas?

Pretty peculiar problem, but try this it may not work, but still give it a try.

On IE look for the menu named "Tools" then go to "Internet Options" and on "Connections" choose "Never Dial a connection".

Why? To avoid IE from making the connection itself or try the opposite of it. And let IE dial for you.

Thanks, Pantion, but I already have that box checked in IE 5's Tools.

I have the question out to 5 message boards. If I find an answer, I'll be sure to post it here.

Many power management features do not work well with 95/98. I would turn them off and see if you have the same problem. I know, you want them to work, but in many cases they won't do well together.

Nathan,
How do I go about turning off power management features?

Here is something strange
I checked the I.P. address for 127.0.0.1
and it belongs to a company called
"loopback inc." (no kidding)

Connecting to No Wonder should show the address 63.80.67.198

I'm sure you already tried changing your homepage.

Maybe re-name your favorites folder or move it somewhere else?

I really don't know the answer, I wanted to share the Loopback inc. name, it seems to describes the problem pretty well.

1. You probably have a power icon in Control Panel. You might have two items that might be checked. Make sure they are unchecked.

2. Check the screen saver to make sure that you aren't turning the hard drives off too.

3. In CMOS you probably have settings there also.

Let us know how you make out with it.

Thanks for your help, folks. One of the posters at the NoWonder site, Fulsome, figured it out.

Ack ack ack! Before you go into your BIOS to play with power settings, just turn off the proxies that a web accelerator program (or AdFilter) installed in your web browser.
For Internet Explorer 5:
Tools-Internet Options-Connection Tab-Settings-remove Checkmark from 'Use a Proxy'.

If on a LAN, or Cable/ADSL modem, hit the 'Lan Settings' button instead of 'Settings' and remove the use proxy checkmark.

Anytime your browser is pointing to 127.0.0.1 (localhost) it means software is using your own computer as a proxy server.

I am unsure why this happened when your computer went into 'Suspend' mode, but my guess is when your computer goes into 'Suspend' mode, you lost your connection to the proxy software which handles the web traffic going through your browser.

Anyways, the software will keep re-adding the proxy setting of 127.0.0.1 everytime it is run, so I would suggest uninstalling it to stop that from happening again. If the software is inactive for any reason, it still leaves the proxy set in your browser, which stops all trafic from getting through, even though your internet connection is just fine.

My problem, it seems, stems from the fact I use ad-blocker software called InterMute. It works great at preventing pop-up ads and blocking slow-loading graphics and animation to speed up my browsing, but also acts as a proxy server.
I will learn to live with this condition rather than remove the ad filter, but at least now I can understand what's happening.
