i just upgraded my cpu from a pentium 233mmx to a amd-k2-400 processor but im getting frequent ramdom freezing. Is there any way i can test if it's a rotten apple(the processor)? oh by the way it was oem..

it's running on a fic 503
with a cl riva tnt
maybe it's incompatible with the video card??

please help

You really need to get an AMD expert on here, but it sure sounds like a heat related problem. If you can give a little more info, like what vidio driver you're using and a bit more about your hardware, it'll help figure out the prob.

Best of luck in all,

I'm not real up on the fic mobo but I do know that most shops sale you a cheap heatsink fan combo for the AMD chips.
Almost all the shops around here only sale the pentium heat sinks rated for like a 266mhz chip. For the most part they will work but there are better. First thing I would do is go to radio shack and get a tube of thermal compound use a very thin layer between the chip and the heat sink then leave the cover off your box and get a small house fan and blow at the mobo see if that stops the freezing and crash's if so add a extra case fan to your box and order a alpha or globalwin heatsink with a good fan like the Y-tech and you should be all set
remember the cooler you can keep it all the better it will run http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
if that does not work post back and we will see what else we can do http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

You don't say what version of windows you are using. There is a patch from M/S for some versions of Win95 that fix a timing problem with K6-2 350's and up that can cause similiar problems. Try disabling your "write cache pipeline", "DRAM read pipeline", and "read around write" options in chipset features in your BIOS. This should help stabilize the system a little and perhaps get rid of your problem. If worst comes to worst, you could try disabling the L2 cache and see what happens. Have to agree with the others; you have to get that chip as cool as you can.....get rid of the OEM h/s & fan and get something a little beefier.

im using win98se, with detanator 2.17 driver for my cl riva tnt. Im also using a very good heatsink/fan with thermal paste too. My proccesor is actually the 2.2v kind and runs really cool.

There was an issue with AMD and Nvidia 3.xx drivers that was just dealt with by Nvidia.
I believe that it is the 3.53 driver that addresses the problem. I didn't think that there were any problems with compatibility between AMD and 2.xx drivers though. You might want to try out their newest driver to see if it solves the prob.
Good luck in all,

~edit - Maybe these will help.

what kinda memery are you using ?
the pentium 233 runs a 66mhz bus
the amd runs a 100 mhz bus
if your running PC-66 @ 100 mhz that would make it do all kinds a bad stuff

your problem if it's not heat and you say it's running cool, then the next place to look is the memery
try reseating your mem, in the mobo.
also check all your conections etc etc when you added the new chip you could have knocked some thing lose.

also check the memery settings in bios are they set right.

If all of that is ok then take the chip back and have the shop you bought it from test it in another board.

Yeah, you should double check the memory settings both on the board jumpers and in BIOS - although BIOS defaults on that board are usually fine.

If you are using EDO SIMMs make sure that your memory is jumpered non-PC100.

And if your are using PC100 DIMMs (could be that they are 10ns?) I have a pair of 64MB 10ns DIMMs that I am running on my 503+ board as I write this, and they do not like to run at 100mhz FSB, so I run the FSB at 95mhz, 4.5x95 to get 427mhz out of a 400chip, or 5x95 to get 475 out of a 450 is almost a guarenteed overclock; the extra few mhz somewhat offset the loss in bus speed, and the system should be very stable 95mhz FSB.

Which ever way you go, you also may want to try raising the core voltage to 2.3 or even 2.4 - experiment.

I tried the new detanator drive but to no avail. My computer still hangs. I'll try the memory setting but it dought it will work. i use Edo ram and i have my board jumpered to non pc-100 ram so do i still have to reset the memory?

I've also heard that AMDk2 processors and TnT cards don't go together? Is that true?
Or is it the fic, amd, and tnt combination?
Please help

Have you installed the Via mini-port driver for AGP?

Yes, it is also very important to use VIAs 3in1 or 4in 1 patch/drivers, even if W98SE doesn't show any problems in the Device Manager.

My TNT works just fine with my K6-2, but those Detonator drivers never worked for me - two times I downloaded the latest reference drivers from Nvidia but both times it was a disaster. The drivers that came with my card work best. At first my TNT ran a little hot so I upgraded the cooling and it was running great.

There can be problems with the way "W95B/C" (using MS USB patch)shares resources with the AGP port on the 503+, resource allocation conflicts that may cause video problems or USB device problems. But this is fixed in Win98.

Later my TNT video card did fail for an unrelated problem (my Zzap! screwup) but after reflashing the video BIOS all was fine again.

(unrelated comment) There were several choices in video chip and memory speed in the BIOS files I had to choose from - first I flashed the fastest one and the card would not start games, then I flashed the next fastest BIOS and it crashed in games - then I flashed the middle speed BIOS and everything has been working fine ever since.
