This is like going back in time. I just bought an IBM PS/1 486sx/d (50)Multimedia model with Win. 3.1. I have a 95 upgrade I would like to install which I tried.I tried using my 95 boot disk to get it started and got the message" you need windows to run this program". I tried going right from the cd but it won`t even start...I checked and the cdrom isn`t slaved to the hdd...it hooks straight up to the sound card. I tried dropping in an already loaded hdd with 95 on it and I got "wrong bios version" messafe. I thought this one would be easy..WRONG.Talk to me, Gary

you have a few choice's slave the cd to the hard drive if it will some old ones will not.
mount a diff cd in the system slaved to the hard drive
make a boot disk with the sound card drivers etc, etc.to make the one in there work from dos.
or load 95 on top of 3.11 from the run line in 3.11 if it will still boot to 3.11 from the drive.
any one else know any short cuts ?
hope that helps
Hello,
Questions: Is CD ok, did you tested CD and is it old type of CD?
Type of sound card (I have manuals for old SB16 cards) and IRQ settings on sound card for CD ROM?
Version of DOS?
Can you test settings with original drivers and utilities? Couple months ago I helped friend of mine with similar problem playing with IRQ settings on sound card. I still have original CD files (double speed) and utilities and I can send to you like attachment if you need them.
Good luck.

Scotter..I was thinking about slaving the cdrom but thought that therewas or should be an easier way. I did manage to get "all" the books for this computer which includes the one for sb16. Of course, they are at home and I`m at work . No,medo I haven`t been able to test the cdrom..I`m not familiar with 3.1 and not sure where to go with it to try that. It lights up with the post and does come on when I put in the 95 disc but nothing else happens. It looks like everything in it is oem so the books and settings should hopfully be there.
Hi,
Windows 3.1(1) relay on autoexec.bat and config.sys in CD configuration, so you have to make it run under DOS first in order to run under WIN(that was my experience).
Your autoexec.bat should have line like this C:\CD\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /V /M:8 and line similar to this c:\cd\SBIDE.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:170,15 /V in your config.sys. You will have to find proper interrupt and input /output range for your CD.
Like Scotter already told you there is problem with some old CD drives to run them like slave. and some of them have reverse cable position than today's CD drives.
.Sorry, if you already know that. Hope it will help.
Good luck.

nope slaving it or poping another in till you get it all hooked up is the best and easyest way. making a boot disk for that thing will be a pain in the rear believe me i did it once.
I never liked haveing the cd run through the sound card anyway unless you needed the slave position for a 2nd hard drive etc.etc
having all the extra drivers load in dos for it pluse windows 95/98 is a pain to configure with it like that.

WOW...I guess I know less than I thought..Which wasn`t a whole lot to begin with.I`ll try the slave plan and see what I can get started..if not I`ll be back to you later today. Thanks, Gary...I`m glad I didn`t get into computers until they were simplified a bit..actually, I waited for you guys to figure it out first.

Will 95 run on an SX ??? I thought minimum was a DX.....
Just reread your first post - If you have an Upgrade CD thats what you must do - upgrade your 3.11 which means it needs to be running perfectly first...

Yep, 95'll run on an sx... My dad's business system used to be a 486sx 33mhz w/16megs ram. We were running 95 on it till he got his new system this month (y2k). IT WILL IT WILL IT WILL!

I don't recommend upgrading from 3.1 to 95. If you have a freshly formatted HD with a real mode CD driver installed you can get a full operating system off the upgrade cd.
Create a file in the root directory NTLDR notice there is no extension nor does the upgrade care what is in this file. You can just type: dir > NTLDR at the command line and it will copy the directory there and you are ready to run setup from the CD

Well...lots of different thoughts here. I set up a 486-25mhz with 95 and it ran fine..it took days to down load anything but it worked. I was just checking in before I actually got started on the beast so I haven`t had a chance to try any of your ideas but I will keep you posted on what works. Gary Just an extra thought...this already has an overdrive in it boosting it to 50mhz. I actually thought about keeping this hdd with the 3.1.1 on it just for memory`s sake..it is kind of a classic, you know. I tried dropping in an already 95 loaded hdd. but it said that the dos was wrong ...can I bypass/upgrade that? Oh ,and just for the record..Win 98 has a minimum req. of 66mhz.

Latest progress report..I took a real short-shortcut and dropped in the hdd with 95 on it and it took off just fine this time however I still can`t seem to access the cdrom. It is/was originally hooked up straight into the sound card. I tried to slave it to the new hdd and it couldn`t be found anywhere.I wasn`t sure of the jumper arrangement on the original cdrom so I put in a spare I have and still no cdrom found. Hook the old one back up and it`s there but still no access. I see a ton of jumpers on the soundcard so I`m sure the secret`s in there somewhere. I`m tempted but not too excited , to put in a different soundcard and see what pops up. What do you think?Gary
