saving my desktop

I have my icon arranged the way I want. How can save this so as to restore this whenever I somehow lose this. I did something to cause all the icons to change locations. I recall that I'm able to restore back to way I had it.
My problem is every once in a while I need to line up the icons and I seem the chose the wrong option and scramble the icon in either by size or alphabely. I end up by having to go through and move all icon one by one till I have it the way I like.
