ok.. I copied the I386 folder to my directory and install win NT4 ( is that what I need to install?? )... then when it re-boots it asked for the floppy it made ( boot up disk ) for NT and there's actually three of them... Now when I put the boot disk for NT it went through alright, then it asked for disk # 2 so inserted the disk #2 and it installed the drivers for keyboard etc. but when it reached the FAT something, it goes to "windows NT 4 ( build 1381 ) single processor 64MB memory kernel something then multi proccessor" i don't have exactly what it says but my system hangs... my system specs are
16MB Blaster Banshee
64 MB FPRAM
AMD-K6-2 450MHZ
56K Rockwell Modem
Yamaha Soundcard
and i'm installing this NT4 on my old 4.2GB quantum bigfoot, partitioned it to FAT16... Please help me out.. I've never used or installed NT4 before, so please
help me.. Thank you..
I posted the same topic on Operating System, but I just need a quick respond and help.. Sorry and thanks..

I had NT4 dual-booted for a couple years. It's very touchy, especially when installing. I'm not sure I ever got away without having the installation CD for some instance during the installation. You might try deleting all traces of your install attempt before trying again, especially in the root of your boot drive. Any trace of your previous installation might cause the same thing. Make sure it properly installs drivers for your IDE or SCSI hard drives before the end of the initial install, or it will fail.

You have been posting on this board long enough to know that multiple posting is discouraged here. Please refrain in the future. Thanks.

Gene C. yes.. I have the original CD and also I have the whole 4.2 GB free space on my HD.. Socalgal sorry if I posted twice, that's why I asked for forgiveness right away.. And also, I think that both my post are ok since they both link to the topic that I would like to ask ( "Operating System" cause I'm having problem installing NT and "Technical Support" coz still.. I'm having problem installing NT).. Forgive me if you may.. I know that double posting is discouraged here, but like what I've said.. I don't know which of those two messageboards should I post.. Just one post to let me slide, but you couldn't resist it.. Nothing personal socalgal.. Just wondering, coz I've been a member of 6 BBS and not one hit me like you did.. Thanks BEN, Gene C. for some info.. If there are more info's that I can gather from you guys, please do.. Thanks again guys...

If you have the CD, set your machine to boot from CD. It's bootable, and will take care of itself, and much faster than waiting for the 3 disks to load.

ok so which CD should I install?? and where is the program located( folder )??? thanks you guys for your help, i'm just to dumb on NT.. /forum/frown.gif
Why go with FAT16 on the install? You blow away most of the NT security features unless you go with NTFS file system which has several perks besides security?
Also, remember that, without a reg hack, NT is not PnP. That's why you need all your device drivers handy.
Lastly, did you make sure all your attached hardware is on the Hardware Compatibility list before starting this? If it ain't listed on the MS list, the component probably won't work.
Hi, I think that you done mistake from very begining. In i386 directory type winnt /? and find switches for flopyless install> I think it is winnt /b. Delete everything from previous installation and do that again. You can use FAT16 for installation and convert using command - convert c: (or d /forum/smile.gif/fs:ntfs. Since you have big drive than make two partions and second one keep like FAT . Also it is important to install service pack 4 or 5 because you will have problem with dial in.
If you have problem with ISA cards that use plug and play from service pack 3 because it work better that from service pack 4.
I hope it will help. Good luck.
That smile was by mistake. It have to be c: (or d /forum/smile.gif /fs:ntfs and you can't type that command on c: drive if you want to convert c:
Sorry, English is foregin language for me.
:
You just said that you have the FULL 4.2GB of free space on that drive.
THAT MEANS IT'S FAT32.
NT DOES NOT READ FAT32. IT HAS TO BE FAT16!
This means you have two choices.
1) Make the partition 2GB WITHOUT using "support for LARGE disks" (in FDISK)
2) Install by booting from the CD, delete the partition, create a new one of 4.2GB and format it using NTFS
Ok d: and after that space and /
Uh........

Do you have a real floppy? The reason O ask is I removed my floppy and set my superdisk to act as a floppy. Now NT4.0 will not install. It will prompt me for the floppies, and go thru the stuuf like you said (mykel) but it would **** out before the install was complete.
