How does one really know if d/l ing those little utility apps for cleaning, sweeping, tweaking etc don't cause spam, trojans, pop-ups etc? I see all kinds of neat little things all over the net but err on the side of caution and only d/l those apps that I see suggested on tech sites. Comments please.

Start here:
Antivirus/Antispy (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=161595)
Tech Tools (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=173743)
If you're not sure about an app, look at the rogue list first:

Mireland and Midknyte I thank you for your responses. I pretty much have done exactly what you suggested by d/ling those items I have seen suggested here and at a couple of other tech sites. I am very leery of d/ling from those sites whose product name is in the url as I think that is where spam and some data mining issues might come into play. I guess that rogue app site has slipped past me, thanks for that info!
