How is it you guys can go days and weeks without rebooting? My system slows down so much. Especially after playing games like Half Life. I believe they call it "memory leakage". My system consists of the following:

AMD K6-2 /450
Epox EP-MVP3G2
128 mb cas 2 memory
Voodoo 3-2000 AGP
20 gb udma 66 / 7200rpm HD
Win 98 se

My system runs very fast until I play a heavy game for a while then I must reboot to help memory. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks J /forum/smile.gif

You can use control-alt-delete to disable anything you don't need running.

jman01pa, Your system seems perfect for gaming, but just do the ctrl alt delete and take out all those crapola progs and you should be alright.

I know exactly what you are talking about jman01pa. My computer gets sooooo slow until I reboot after I leave it on for a day or so. Usually I can't even make it that long before a reboot is necessary. And a hot boot won't take care of the problem. I have to turn it all the way off for a couple of minutes before it will be back to its old spunky self /forum/smile.gif

Could be that you have a lot of unnecessary programs being autostarted by Windoze that are sitting there eating up CPU cycles and memory & producing nothing. Try using msconfig to reduce the number of autostart programs running in the background and performance should improve all the way around. /forum/wink.gif

I can leave mine on for a week or so before rebooting (win98SE...previously had Win98)
I rarely use any ramfree'ers. I dont know if I could go longer..I just havent tryed cuz I always install some piece of software that requires rebooting or some hardw
are before that week is up.
My specs?
2 systems....

first of which is a Cel 366@550 w/ 128 RAM on a SY-6BA+III

Second - a PII 350@497 w/ 64 RAM on a SY-6VBA 133

The second machine stays on more than the first, because its my mom's machine and doesnt get restarted alot...I always mess around with mine..as i bet alot of ya do /forum/smile.gif

You tech people out there should know that there is a program out there called "memturbo" which runs in the background and when you press the hot-keys it automaticly refreshes your RAM like a clean boot-up.

that sounds more like a heat problem than a memery problem how hot is your chip getting ? what kind of cooling do you have for your computer ?
the k6-2-450 chips run realy hot anyway if you have a retail version 2.4 volts with the heatsink built on that chip GETS HOT the hotter it gets the worse your computer runs
especially after playing games /forum/smile.gif

I'd bet if you added more cooling the problem would go away /forum/smile.gif

My cpu temp avg around 112f and my system temp is around 75f(my board shows the temps0. I dont know what the bad temps are but I believe these are safe. I have two case fans, cpu fan, turbo slot fan, fan on my voodoo 3 and of course my power supply fan. I dont even overclock. I am running a 300 watt power supply.

try these settings in bios worth a shot:
SDRAM CAS Latency Time
set the SDRAM CAS Latency Time to 2, increase it to
3 if your system becomes unstable.
System BIOS Cacheable,Video BIOS Cacheable,Video RAM Cacheable
disable all three.
Memory Hole At 15M-16M-Disable
AGP Aperture Size-if you have 64mg's of ram select 64.
Spread Spectrum-Disable
Auto Detect DIMM/PCI Clk-Disable
Assign IRQ For VGA- Enable
USB Controller-Disable unless you use usb device.
USB Keyboard Support-Disable unless you use usb device.
Video shadowing-Disable
hope these help a little.

How do you find out what all those little abbreviations in the : control/alt/delete box
mean.Like:

Explorer
Rnaapp
Pleapu
NAVApw32
3dmoused
Systray
Csinject
N protect
Cg16eh
Cgmenu
I know what systray, explorer. 3dmoused, n
protect, but the rest ?? Are they necessary?
Does it hurt anything for them to running. My computer seems to doing Ok. So I don't know.
Any ideas?????? thanks

Pickel

rnaapp- part of you dial-up
Pleapu- ?
NAVApw32-norton anti-virus
Csinject-norton clean sweep
N protect-norton
Cg16eh-norton crashgaurd
Cgmenu-norton crashgaurd

Use the start/find/files or folders
search your hard drive, when you find a match
you will see the path of where it was found,
right click on it and select properties to see more information.

you should leave anti-virus on for sure
the rest is up to you. Do you think crashgaurd works for you? do you really want clean-sweep always on?
Its your choice.

I have nothing unnecessariy running. Initially the games run fantastic. Just after a while it gets choppy and stays choppy even after i leave the game. Are those memory defragmentors any good? Can anyone suggest a good one?

this might not be what you are looking for. but, I'm kinda lazy about these things. and I always try to keep my machines running at all times. that way I can usually return e-mail within minutes of getting it. and I also only have what it takes to do the job running in the background. just my options.
I ran two lines #12/2 wire from my breaker box. each line is on a 20 amp breaker. from the breaker box they each run into a hot water heater timer. from there they each run into a ditek surge protection. and all my power strips have surge protection to. my machine's shut down at 11:57 p.m. and back on at 4:00 a.m. and it turns the coffee pot on to.lol my test and service machine's shut down at 11:57 p.m. and back on at 12:57 a.m. they have been doing this since Jan.1889 and never a problem. Did shut things down for the hurricane "floyed" my work area temp. stays a constant 67 degrees year around tho.

I'd have to agree with Dave - crash guard is really a waste. It's never saved my system, - crashed it a few times. Disable it either in Norton itself or within your msconfig.

Don't totally agree on the Anti-V - it can bog down your system if you are running software that uses all of your RAM and then starts in on HD swap file space. When I'm playing games, the anti-v gets turned off.

Good question pickel, I've wondered about some of those many times, I was really happy when I learned about msconfig too,
...control, I need more control over my machine ... Ah,ha,ha... (mad scientist type laughter)

Dave_H, that seems a very logical way to track them down, Thanks.

I don't use Crash Guard any more either, I figure if my system is crashing, there is something wrong (probably in the Registry).
I would rather find out what that is and fix it instead of taking the placebo approach.

Hey Gene! You're computers have been turning on and off since January >1889< ?? I suppose you COULD have swiped the plans for Babbages mechanical computers back then, but that'd either mean you're some kind of immortal or you also stole the plans for HG Wells time machine... Haw!

I DID used to leave my Tandy 1000EX on all the time, but heck, the thing ran on 5 1/4 disks! However, after I got a newer computer I usually turned it off after the day was over. I consider a computer to be like a car, the more miles on it, the more likely parts are gonna start failing.

Chainsaw

Alzarius,
I look at it like driving a car too, except that I would compare "leaving the computer on all the time" to wide open highway miles (maybe lots of miles, but virtually no wear and tear on your vehicle)and "turning your computer on & off every day" to city stop and go traffic (not many miles logged, but lots of wear and tear).
Only time will tell, but we will probably both have new computers long before either one of us has our computer die from one method or the other.
May our computers live long and all of us prosper.

Have you ever noticed how light bulbs always burn out when you flip the switch on, rarely do they burn out while left on.
I think the same is true with all electrical components, even the more sophisticated ones.
Leaving it on constantly maintains an even temperature, less expansion/contraction from heat-up/cool-down cycles.

Chainsaw

Excellent analogy amauri, I agree.

I wouldn't leave that laptop on all the time. They can get really hot. There isn't much air moving through them small cases.

Freezar01 the CDROM's and HD's from servers are the same used in everyday systems. Servers just use more drives than regular machines. Besides, I believe most people at this sight build quality machines, that could be used as servers... 8)

It is better to turn off your computer then to leave it on, leaving on the computer will shorten the life of your HD's CD-ROMS and other components in your PC Computers like servers are built to stay on all the time now desktops it so it's not smart to leave you computer on all the time.
