How do we make Com ports work properly

I have a A-BIT BH-6 mobo, there are 2 com ports wired in, my mouse is a PS/2 with its own port, my modem is assigned to com1, there
are 2 unused com port jacks, when i use either one of the ports with my digital camcorder the softwhare won't pick up a com port, Win 98 device driver say the ports are ok

Have you tried making sure they are enabled in the BIOS Setup? They probably aren't. You're connecting a digital camcorder to a COM port and not a firewire port?
