I have recently built a new system using a Jetway 530BF (AT) mb w/AMD K6-II 350 cpu. Occasionally during boot the floppy drive will not load. I changed both the ribbon and the floppy, and still have the same problem. I can continue booting by hitting F1, but then I don't have access to the floppy drive in windows (win98). I'm not sure if the problem is with the board, or the bios settings (Award). Anyone have any suggestions?

Seems to me, that if you've eliminated the obvious things, cables, connections & hardware type things, maybe you could just go to the Device Manager and delete the Floppy Drive there, then go to Install new Hardware in the Control Panel and let Windows re-find the floppy. This technique might help if there is some kind of IRQ conflict.

Hope this helps,

BIOS settings would be my next try, you could always check the Floppy setting there and use bios defaults for all else. Take a look at the boot sequence too.
Best of luck

Thanks for the help...I let windows re-install the floppy and I disabled the floppy detect in the bios, but since the problem is intermittent, I guess I won't know if this will work for a few more days yet. /forum/smile.gif

Any chance you loaded a policy editor on this computer, for NT policies? Do you have a windows password enabled? Probably not, but it's worth asking.

How long has it been since you've updated those anti-virus definitions and run a sweep of your system?

This system was built 2 weeks ago, and I ran anti virus after I loaded all the software. The anti virus program came with the mobo, and I'm not sure how old it is. As for policy editor...I'm not sure what that is. /forum/smile.gif

I'd be real suspicious of any anti-v packaged with a system unless it was norton, fprot, or macafee, and the definitions were updated.
Didn't think policy editor was an issue....
I'd go with Chainsaw's first post and let your system find the floppy drive after taking it out from a safe mode device manager screen. Before you lose the floppy drive, make sure the boot sequence in the CMOS set-up doesn't look at the floppy until after you've re-installed it.

If you only built the machine two weeks ago
and have replaced the floppy and ribbon
connector, that seems to indicate a possible
floppy controller on your M/B.

It's been 3 days since I changed the settings and so far so good. I really hope it isn't the mobo, but I am ready to return it if I have to. Again...thanks for all the feedback. /forum/smile.gif
