"time remaining" increases in Nero Vision Express 3

I loaded some AVI files into Nero Vision Express 3 (NVE3) in order to create a DVD-Video disc. The "time remaining" kept growing, and eventually the conversion process stopped. Why does NVE3 do this with some files and not others? I usually get good burns.
