I own a G6-233 PC with an Intel 440LX mobo "Astoria" in it.
I downloaded the new bios file from Gateway. It did not work though. The system hangs up after the logo comes on.Actually, it detects the HD, CDRom, memory but that is it. It stopps right there. It has 1 jumper to change from recovery, setup (to change CPU speed, and normal ops.
It doesnt say that I have to remove jumper from normal ops. I only rempove it when I have to recover the old bios again.
Thank you for suggestions,
Futzel

Anybody have any ideas on this? My contention has been that improperly flashed boards are toast - but Joel suggested that a CMOS chip from an identical board might get it to boot, at which point the original chip could be reinserted and properly flashed, perhaps.

A CMOS from an identical board might help out. Regarding the jumpers, however, on ASUS boards, the BIOS jumper is in one position for normal operation, and in a "flash" position to flash the BIOS. - But you don't leave the jumper in the flash position - you have to move it back to the normal position - otherwise the board/BIOS thinks you are re-flashing. Might be the same on your board - the theory is sound.
Also - should you EVER opt to do this again, ALWAYS make a copy of the original BIOS file and place it both on a BOOT floppy and a secure place on the hard drive, so you can back out.
Should this be a bona fide Gateway board, I'm sure Gateway tech support might be able to point you towards a source for a new BIOS chip in the interest of greed and commerce http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif. That is unless the system is very old and unsupported in which case I'd start searching the junk shops in your area for a replacement chip and/or board.

I would not be able to change chips since the flash chip is surface mounted and cant be removed. I need to update the bios to have Celeron support. But Axel is right. I am going to take the PC to Gateway for them to figure it out.
I just think that it is strange that their posted bios does not work.
Thank you for the help

You just have to replace the BIOS chip either using an identical board or getting a new one. Also in SOME cases you CAN recover the BIOS if you made the backup.
Go to www.tekram.com (http://www.tekram.com) and on the BIOS update they have a method to recover from a uncorrectly flashed BIOS.
But is better to go Gateway Tech Support and tell to do it for you and it will be 100% guaranteed.
