A friend of mine has a desktop computer that is connected to a wireless network. The router is a linksys. Not sure what the wireless adapter is. In any case, the software in systray says that it is connected, and ipconfig gives a correct IP (192....; however DNS suffix is blank). The ISP is SBC Yahoo DSL.

Any ideas?

power off the modem and router. turn on the modem first, then the router.

if the default linksys IP is 192.168.1.1 to get into the router configuration screen. check that the router is getting a valid IP from the ISP.

I always wait at least 15 seconds before turning on the next device.

Turn on modem, wait, turn on router, wait, turn on PC, wait, then test the Internet.

it could be true, and that is why i hate winXP build in "Zero Wireless Config" feature
all the information provided is always so fake ...

most of the time when you get "connected" but you have no connection

usually it means you are blocked, or you have no IP, or signal quality poor, reception poor, etc....

unless you use the good software from the NIC drivers like the ones from Linksys or Dlink, you wont know really what is going on.

those build in messages from windows, are so Vague...

Hi AllG

Hows u these days
hope everythin worked out ok dude
I hate to agree old chap but i must Wireless Zero Config in XP is a nightmare!
I prefer to use the nic drivers - cisco is especially good , Linksys and Dlink
Disable WZC from services and use another package!
Or even better still go Suse Linux 10.1!!!
Free with this months pcpro mag
£6.50 is a bit steep for a mag mind you!
Are magz as expensive in the states?
Why cant we just have a mag with no blag?
