I have an old Maxtor 120 meg hard drive. I need to hook it up to get some data off of it. I have a std hard drive (Western Dig 6.4), & a cd rom. The old drive has no obvious jumpers. Can I swap it with the cd rom, or put it in line with the new hard drive (temporarily). If I hook it up to the hard drive "master", will it identify itself as "slave" ? I just need a quick hook-up to copy files.
Thanks in advance...

put it on the secondary IDE all by itself and that way it wont matter if it is master or slave

Have you tried the manufacturer's website for jumper settings? I don't know about Maxtor, but some hard drive manufacturers (Seagate and Quantum, for instance) still keep information about some of their really ancient drives on their websites. Worth a try if you haven't visited already.
I found jumper settings for a prehistoric 100Mb drive on Seagate's site. The jumpers were in an unusual location on the drive too - actually on the PCB, not on the back as you would expect. Possibly the same with yours?

I have an old drive that I had a terrible time finding the jumpers. They were tucked away under one of the rails bolted to the underside of the drive. My guess is that they'd be there somewhere. Good luck.
