Began having the Win98 Shutdown problem (system hang, not auto shut-off, etc) shortly after installing a new modem and trying to resolve IRQ conflicts.

What I oringinally did, was install the modem, and because of IRQ conflicts, went into my bios and disabled bios assignment of IRQ's for the USB ports and VGA, hoping that this would free up resources that my modem could then use to resolve the conflict. Anyway, immediately after changing those settings, I began to experience the Win98 shutdown issue.

To make a long story short, I got the IRQ conflict resolved, but as long as I have IRQ assignment for the VGA disabled in bios, the Win98 shutdown error appears. As soon as I enable IRQ assignment for the VGA in bios, the Win98 shutdown error no longer effects my machine.

Just thought I would pass this along.

Win98 SE, shutdown patch NOT installed

Without knowing what you did about the IRQ assignment, most computer instructors and technicians I know strongly feel that a modem should be on com 2 (IRQ 3). Most Plug and Play modems will go there if (1)the second serial port in the bios is disabled, (2)if there are any jumpers on the modem they should all be off and the bios has plug and play OS enabled.

Guess the point that I was trying to make, is that regardless of IRQ conflicts..... IF in bios, IRQ assignment for the VGA was disabled, the shutdown error (hanging, etc) appeared. Change the bios setting to enable IRQ assignment for VGA, and I no longer experienced the win98 Shutdown issue.

Just an FYI.
