So I'm driving to work today, and I notice the oil pressure gauge jumping all over the place. Ya know how it has the range of idea values marked off by a few lines on the dial? The reading would seem to jump erratically from the high end to the low end. It almost seemed as if when I would make a turn, the gauge would drop to the low end, but it could have just been doing it randomly and this was a coincidence. Any ideas what could cause this?

Car, BTW, is a 93 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0L, automatic. 180K miles. A ton, yes, but from what I've heard the inline-6 engine it has can run forever. :)

Probably a loose connection somewhere, I would get it looked at tho just to be sure ....... The oil pressure can't really change that quickly, but all the same oil pressure is mighty important......... Go get it looked at ............. Prolly wise ;)

Next time I stop for gas I'll check the oil level, from what I've been reading, if it is really low you can see this sort of fluctuation.
I also checked around google and apparently the oil pressure sender (I think that is what its called) tends to fail quite often on the Jeep Cherokee, apparently it isn't that expensive of a part to replace if it is the culprit...

my oil gauge sticks towards high, but after awhile it goes to normal...and I've checked me oil and looks fine, I've been told the gauges can go bad from time to time..in fact my last car(Jeep Lareado, 91) oil gauge would go all the way to high and then drop to zero and stay there...I had oil in it too..My dad said to ignore it, in fact he disconnected the oil gauge thing(had to check me oil quite frequently though..LOL) :t

I have no idea why it needed so much, I had to put a quart in it about a month ago, but other than that its given me no problems, so this came out of the blue.
