Close all programs and only run scandisk. You can try Norton Disk Doctor or Nuts&Bolts Disk Minder. Of course they cost and scandisk is free. /forum/smile.gif d25woods 12-01-1999, 10:52 PM as far as I know all programs suppose to be closed, how do I make sure they are? commodsquad 12-01-1999, 10:58 PM I might also add that you have to let scandisk do its thing and not be doing anything active with the system like browsing the web or have any open applications going (basically just sit and watch it till it is done or get a snack and some coffee or somthing)...the reason I say this is cuz my cousin, who is new to the computer world, wondered why scandisk wouldnt work after I told him that he needed to run scandisk and defragment his computer on a regular basis and during his explanation I found out that he was trying to run it when he was web hopping...I am inclined to believe that it's a common mistake and knowledge that is more commonly taken for granted when more experienced users basically say to defrag and scandisk without explaining that these applications need to be the only programs running when they are implemented.....I dont know it this type of situation comes up enuff to warrant a place in a FAQ section but I think that it at least deserves top billing in the defrag and scandisk directions LOL.. Also press CTRL-ALT-DELETE ONCE and check for any hidden apps and close them. Be carefull not to close explorer, rundll32, systray or anyother vital windows app. Try running scandisk after all that. Eli 12-02-1999, 08:36 PM Or just run it from safe mode. corvettedoctor 12-06-1999, 07:21 PM As I've read, the primary culprit is mainly the Virus program writing to the hard drive causing continious restarts. In the RH lower corner of the screen next to the clock is the icon for the bug killer. Right click on it to disable(for Norton) or at worst ctl+at+del and kill it there. SysOpt.com
