I have the disc for win98 and the ISP will supply IE and outlook. cant I just take what I want from the old mach and transfer to new. there is a lot of junk I dont want.

Ghost is best when used after you have everything installed on your computer you want, including all your settings. It'll transfer the image of your drive from one hard drive to another. But if you have things on the old drive that you don't want on the new drive, then Ghost won't help you. It'll copy everything over.
Place the ghost program on a bootable floppy drive and boot to it. And the instructions are pretty clear to a point. It'll prompt you if you want to restore or copy an image from one drive to another.
What version do you have? Some versions are different than the others.

I was wrong it came with my soyo MOBO. not the DD. it is 5.1c on a CD with two other things. I would assume I would have to hook up both drives to the one comp. like master and slave. my old drive is 1gig the new one 8.4

Yes, you need to hook up both and make the new drive the master and the old the slave when you're ready to Ghost.

Don't forget after you ghost it, you'll have to run Fdisk to create a D drive etc. Now if you have a program like Partition Magic or Disk Copy, you can combine the other 7 GB onto C if that's what you want to do. Fdisk won't let you expand C drive without wiping it out first. Then that defeats the purpose.

OK If I screw up my old HD im in trouble. I assume the folowing. I do all this on the old comp. hook new drive to second connector of drive cable. and power of course, the new drive has a C section of over 2gig. set the new drive jumper to slave. insert ghost CD in drive and click ghost icon I then get a gray screen with instructions on it, click disk. so far??? or do I take drive out of old mach and do it on the new one. the new mach has nothing on it but command com

Do it on the old one. But you are going to run into problems like bus mastering drivers that are not on the old one but on the new motherboard. So 98 may have them and everything will be OK. But then maybe not. I would uninstall the USB also in device manager before making the move. Unless you have to do a ghost image, I'd do it from scratch.
When you drop that image from the old drive to the new one, it will overwrite everything on the new drive. That's why I mentioned using fdisk or a partitioning software to recover the rest of the disk space.

Thanks, I have had some glitches in the old mach, like with outlook and getting errors to have to reboot thru safe mode. I think I might be transfering these to the new mach. So I think I'll start out with a "new clean mean machine" any thing I can't transfer over forget it. I understand that things like the address book and letters can be transported over. I have win98 and suite 8 and my zip drive and quick shot software. all legal. lot of the other stuff I got of the net and can do it again, http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
