ok ill try before off to bed
ok get a c: prompt ...type: fdisk
delete primary and extended dos partions and any logical drives .....then not sure if you have to restart .... but if it doesnt say to dont ....then define or add extended dos partion and logical drives ..when it says drive letter added or changed your set ...but check you active dos partion ....make sure its c:
ok now you will restart ....use the boot disk .....(quick note win95 boot disks dont work with win98 must be 98 for 98 if this is the case 95 for 98 install 98 then upgrade ) and it will load and setup cd drive then use the restore disk and all will be well again!lol but you lose alll your current info on hard drive but at this point it seems the damage is done so there was no saving it . that is the best i can do with the info provided hopefully youll wait till tomarrow and get some sleep ..cus take it from a puter geek who just HAS to make it work NOW it a lot easier after a good nights sleep! lol! hope this helps

Ok here is the way I do it it might be different than most but it works for me. Start with a #1 dos disk place it in your drive then start your computer. When the dos screen comes up press F3 twice. This will get you to the A:\> now insert a ezdrive disk( maxblaster or something) if you don't have one you can download it from your hard drive manufacture web page. Follow instructions it will find your drive, it won't install itself on your system. It will ask you for your dos disk or win95 startup disk at this time if you are running win 98 put your win 98 startup disk in now. It will ask you if you want to use fat16 or fat 32 choose one then it will install everything to make your drive bootable. Then reboot and you should see C:\> from this point install your cd drivers and your windows 95 or 98. You might have to install MSDCEX.EXE in your root directory before your CD drivers will install. You should find it on the #1 dos disk.

Butchk i think win98 boot disk loads a genaric cd driver ..thus negating the need for driver loading?

i would not use the maxblast or whatever "utility" disk the drives comes with...i just got a maxtor drive and every time I tried to use the diskette, it froze the computer up. so i did it the old-fashioned way and fdisked the hd and formatted it with the boot disk.....

When you say "RESTORE" Cd did you mean the Microsoft's Windows CD or your COMPUTER Manufacturers CD? If it is a MANUFACTURERS CD you will most likely need THAT manufacturers Boot disk! (as the boot disk will have the decoder for their "image" that is on the cd.)
