PCI-express is a new type of slot that was made mainly for video cards. The video card uses a PCIE 16x slot, but there are other slots that are 8x, 4x, and can be used for other cards and such. PCI is still the standard for other peripheral cards.
What happened to AGP??? It got replaced... By PCI-express.
It is not compatible with regular PCI cards, as this uses a different type of bus. However, PCI slots can be found on motherboards containing PCI-express slots too.

EDIT: I found another PCI-express card.... and it's not a graphics card.
