Hi,
I've had me compu for a couple of months now, but all of the sudden the fan of my power supply died (it runs really slow now), so my case gets pretty hot. Is it a smart idea to replace the power supply or the entire case? I haven't had any experience with building pc's, so is it hard to do it?
Thnx...

It will likely be easier for you to replace the power supply than the case. It may make sense to replace the case with the supply in it when you are confident of your skills. Replacing just the power supply involves whatever screws you may need to remove to open the case and usually 4 screws to remove the power supply, and disconnecting all the power cables. Everything else remains as it is.

Before you do this, determine whether your computer has an AT or an ATX power supply. AT has 2 plugs that go to the motherboard side by side and a power on cable to the switch on the front of the case. ATX has just one plug to the motherboard and the power switch on the front of the case connects to the motherboard.

Replacing the case means taking the motherboard out and putting it in the new case, along with the drives, cables, and all the cards. It's a complete disassembly. (The cards usually are a tight fit against the back of the case, so muct be removed individually from the motherboard as well.)It's a bit tedious & time consuming for a newbie.

just replace the fan inside the power supply with another case fan - its cheaper and really easy to do - i just had to do that on mine the other day....

Your case and or fan may still be under warranty. Yhey may replace the whole unit for you. Contact place of purchase. Replacing the power supply is easy and you wont have to remove any of the components, maybe just a few cables to reach the connectors, replacing the case is a major PITA, especially when your short on time, like meee http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Glad someone thought of that! It occurred to me after I posted...

It would probably be a good idea to let the place you bought it from look at it. Something caused that to happen and it would be best to find out what it is/was.

Please let us know if they explain it.
