I have a Elite K7S7AG (V1.5A) motherboard. The board done me well, but I upgraded it a while ago due to the lack of AGP port.

I now want to use it for an office machine, but the only Socket A processors available are Semprons. The board is old and the website doesn't list Sempron on the list of tested CPU's.

This board has a 333FSB, could take up to AMD 3000+ XP.

My understanding is that sempron chips are based on thoroughbred cores, but with 1/2 the CPU Cache.

Is there any reason (like a voltage problem), that the motherboard could reject a Sempron chip given that it takes Thoroughbred and Barton Core chips with no problems? (Obviously the RAM would be PC2700 or PC3200).

I couldn't care less, if the CPU is reported wrongly as a Athlon XP or Duron - just as long as it works.

Thanks

Semprons /are/ Thoroughbred, Thorton or Barton cores, just like you're used to from the Athlon XP. No castrations, just different branding, and different FSB/multiplier setup.

Boards whose BIOS does know the CPU core models, but does not know what name to put to that new brand ID, will possibly set the CPU up alright except for the name.

I have the PC-Chips M847LU which is identical, and used a Sempron 2800+ in it with 2x512MB PC2700. No problems, but I can't remember if the name was correct.

No they're not. Socket-A Semprons are rebranded Athlon XP. This has been said above.

The Socket-A Sempron is the same chip as an Athlon XP being used to fill the same marketing niche as a Duron.

Thank you all.

I'll slap it in - My main concern was cooking the chip due to voltage problems.

That definitely won't happen - these Semprons are desktop chips (not mobile), thus use the same voltage ID encoding toward the regulator circuit.
