In viewing my SYSTEM.DAT, I found a lot of old equipment and software still there even though I had used the correct procedures to remove them. Does anyone know of a way to rebuild the registry with only the current items, short of renaming SYSTEM.DAT and reinstalling Windows? I've tried SCANREG /FIX and REGCLEAN with no success. Thanks

Unfortunately, the "correct" procedures often leave much of their "stuff" behind. Regclean will remove only certain types of orphaned entries. Other programs like "Nuts & Bolts" or "Cleansweep" have reg cleaners that can identify entries that refer to missing files. Even that won't get everything. I go thru the registry and just thru trial & error have learned to remove unneccessary stuff (the amount of useless stuff is incredible). My system.dat is about 1mb with all my programs installed. Even without removing any more stuff, you can benefit by exporting and copying the registry back. Look at http://members.aol.com/axcel216/newtip3.htm. Look at the "Shrink the Registry" article.

I wouldn't worry about it. As the saying goes "If it works, don't fix it". It's only one meg. So unless you are having big problems, I'd leave it alone.
