Well, the title kind of says it all. I have a Zoom 2949L External Dualmodem. In that last couple of days, I've noticed that when I turn on my PC and modem, almost all of the lights are on the modem. I usually have to unplug the modem, unplug the serial cable, unplug the phone lines, replug all these in (sometimes, in different combinations), until I can get it working. This usually happens after shutting down the computer at night, then firing it up the next day; however, yesterday, I shut the thing down and fired it up 5 minutes later, and the modem lights still all came on.

Could this be a problem due to bad capacitors on the board? The modem is under warranty, so I'm not worried about getting it replaced, but it's not even a year old yet. Anyone have any suggestions what in the world could be wrong and how I might can fix it (aside from shipping it off)?

Thanks.

Well, if you want, you could try replacing most of the cables. The serial cable, phone line, etc. It's possible that there's some afoul in one of them and it's causing this. Second, have you ever flashed the bios? Or is it even flashable? Not sure but I know my USR Courier is. There could be something bad in the modem, but try the cables first. If unplugging everything sorta fixes it, I'd almost lean to the cables as I have a harder time thinking that something is bad in the modem. Of course it could require the removal of all cables to somehw reset it, but you did say that you have to install them differently somtimes... Anyway, just try the cables first. Heck, mayeb even the powersupply is going bad. Try and replace that as well. If it DID go bad, make them replace it for free since that should be under warranty as well.

Cables and a bad power supply don't explain what's going on - get the modem replaced - sounds like a factory defect.

There's a small chance you may have contracted a virus on your system, so I'd do a sweep with the latest anti-v definitions installed, but most likely, you just had a modem hardware failure.
