Hello!

I just acquired a Dell Dimension 4100 motherboard with a P3, 1GHZ CPU. I checked out the Dell website and on-line documentation. What it does not tell me is the pinout for the Control panel connector (J8C3). The Dell documentation shows me the motherboard and pinouts, but not the description of what each pin does. Google got me no where. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

You are aware that Dell used a prioprietary power supply back then, with the same connector as ATX but a different wire arrangement, and if you sucessfully power it up with an ATX power supply it will go POOF?

You'll need a Dell power supply with both the 20-pin and 6-pin connector attached, then you can just poke around at the panel connectors until the thing turns on. Really, you won't hurt a thing so long as you're using the right power supply.

It came with the original powersupply and didn't even notice this! Thanks.

Will try your advice, but would still like a pinout if possible.

Anyone else with some guidance/thoughts/suggestions!

Cheers!

Have you looked closely at the connector yet?

Most mobo have the connection pinouts printer next to the connector.

I searched everywhere I could think of on the Dell website since I am still Dell warranty certified, but I could find nothing about J8C3 connector other than what it was and it's location on the mobo.

SA - truly appreciate your time invested by combing the Dell website. No, nothing is printed on the motherboard showing the pinout of any header.

Crashman - wow, thanks. Just to ensure that I got the right info...your text references J8C1 and the graphic is for a J9D2 header. Are these both the same and/or equivalent to the J8C3 header on the Dell motherboard that I have?

Thanks to you both for your assistance.

Cheers!

Yes, it's the Intel Front Panel header, standard since around 2000.

Most Dell boards are modified Intel boards, with the ATX power connector offset 2 or 3 rows to one side. You can look at the retail board and see the same solder points. For the front panel connector, Dell didn't get any modifications.

By the way, the key (pin 14) is the missing pin. Intel also had an 18-pin version, but the first 16 pins were the same.
