Using a cell phone for internet service

I was told by someone that if I got a USB adapter for my cellphone I could pick up internet serivce about twice as fast as dialup depending on my signal.

Is this true?

And if its true, im assuming that I would also require to get internet access for my phone first?

Actually someone figured out how to "cheat" on some phone services, using the data link that lets you send text messages and check your email. I think companies are "closing the holes".

You would need a phone that would support EVDO to get faster speeds than dialup.
