on my ASUS motherboard i have a fan on the nforce 4 chipset that is placed on the motherboard itself. everytime i start the computer from cold boot that fan makes a noise, i think a baring has gone. then about 2-3 minutes later it stops. if i was to disconnect that fan what sort of impact would it have on the board?
ive got a extra fan on the casing that blows in cold air. if thats any help.

thanks

You mean the Noise stops or the fan stops?

I would contact ASUS for a possible RMA.

That's a manufactor Replacement when a product fails in the warranty period.

The North Bridge will overheat causing you more problems that you would want to deal with.

The fan can be replaced with any similarily sized fan. Radio Shack should have a selection to choose from.

I have the same problem on my EPoX board. The northbridge fan will sort of rattle/buzz for a little and then stop. Sounds as if it's hitting something but so far as I can tell it's not hitting anything. This only happens on a cold boot.

I had the same problem with a power supply fan. What it could be is that the fan is to loose on the motor. The axle anyway. Due to this condition the fan will make a noise. As the temperatures increase metals and other materials on the fan expand causing the fan's axle to straiten out, causing the noise to subside. My suggestion to you is do what sterling said, get another, similarly sized fan to replace it, or you could consult asus and either have the fan repaired or replaced by them.

ive replaced the fan with one ive purchased. i have used some thermo paste and clipped the fan into place. i then turned on the PC and the fan was spinning okay, a message came up saying "fan speed set to low, this warning can be turned off in bios". which is what i have done.

I went into system monitor and its not showing the rpm of that fan or that fan temperature.

does anyone know?

This is quite a common problem with cheapo fans. I believe the ones that use sleeve bearings as opposed to ball bearings cause this problem. My case fans do this now, too. After a few years of operation they seem to wear down. Makes me want to spend the extra $$$ up front and buy higher quality fans to begin with. :)

If you replaced your "smart fan" with a "dumb" one, it won't be able to report fan speed to the motherboard's sensors. This is OK, as long as you know for sure that the fan is spinning.

If the fan you installed only has two wires going to the plug, then there will be no fan speed monitoring. Only fans with 3 wires have speed control. You may want to replace the fan with a 3 wire one.

fan + dust = noises

to keep those annoying noises away you may:

1. clean your FANS very often, so no dust gets acumulated on them
2. if that is too late already (dust already on fan), then replace fan with a new fan
3. use water cooling :D

if that fan isn't cooling the chipset enough - you don't know w/o a monitor you're gonna have problems

how warm is it when you run the machine for awhile - take off the cover, turn the machine off and see how warm it is - too hot to the touch and I'd try a replacement - and thermal grease may keep the fan on that chipset if it's vertical but not forever......
