I am building a Athlon 500 w/ FIC MB and can not get the system to post. I have sent the MB back and got a new one and still won't post at startup.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your problems are probably coming from IRQ conflicts.

Use nothing but the Vid card, CPU and RAM in the system.

I had the same problem with my K7M until Isat down, read the manual and actually saw what PCI slots share whar IRqs with what other system devices. Then I rearanged the system and I've been fine since. Be wary of USB devices until everything else is settled out.

I agree with Dominus. start with vid card, cpu and ram, then install the rest of the components one at a time until everything works.

OK, I have now started the system with MB(FIC), Athlon 500, Video card and Ram(PC100)only. The MB has already been exchanged . The Video card has been exchanged and the processor is new. The ram is not, but is PC 100. The system still does not post. What could be wrong?

How many beeps do you get when you first power on the computer? Should only be one beep. Have you tried a different video card? That can stop the computer from posting. I have had bad RAM that stoped the computer from posting. RAM can go bad. If you can, try different RAM, If you are running two DIMM's try one, then the other. If you are running four SIMM's try just two at a time and rotate them to see if that's it.

Is the motherboard shorting out someway by the method in which you attached it to the case? Are you extremely careful when you work (touch) on the system. Static electricity can make a motherboard useless. Are you sure you have everything connected to the motherboard correctly? Check the manual carefully. Been there done that.

Hope this helps.

Something else that I have not seen mentioned yet, but ran into with another guy who was trying to upgrade and displayed the same symptoms you are listing, was the power supply.

Specifically, he had one of the first ATX power supplies made, and it did not contain the correct voltage, etc. to power the latest boards according to spec.

If your PS is extremely old, you may want to double check that it is the proper one for todays boards.
