Whilst attempting to flash my bios (for a GA BX2000) using Awdflash utility, i receive the error message "insufficient memory", and consequently cannot continue. Any help much appreciated.

Be sure you are flashing from the DOS prompt and not from inside Windows. Hit F8 on boot-up and select "boot to DOS mode" instead of Normal or safe modes. Be sure to have command.com on your saving disk so you can backup your old BIOS just in case. (But you knew that) /forum/wink.gif

You're actually, well according to Chaintech, ment to boot from a floppy that contains absaloutly no tsr's, etc.., just for safety's sake.

I've encountered a similar hiccup while flashing an Award bios. Come to find out all I needed to do was disable some of the options in the bios that would use memory, like any of the "Shadow RAM" stuff. Then it flashed just fine.

After you flash it, you can then re-enable any of the Shadow RAM you want.

You can also make the native dos boot disk that leaves out tsr's and other drivers that interfere with the BIOS flashing by typing this at the command prompt...
format A: /s
remember there is a space between the colon and the forward slash...

oh yeah, I almost forgot...you can put the award flash utility and the .BIN file on the disk also so that you can run your flash from there and dont writeprotect the floppy disk so that you can save the old bios (the award utility will give that option at the beginning of the process) in case of any probs..

also with some mobo you need to go to bios and under the ide 1,2,3,4 set them all to none(instead of auto). and use the 3.5, these "insuff memory messages were common on the soyo boards. good luck

That's good advice commodsquad. I just want to mention that when I was also getting this "not enough memory" error while trying to flash, it was after doing EVERYTHING that possibly could be done to get more memory.

I'm a hack from quite a ways back, DOS 3.x days. So I know all about configuring memory and upper memory and high memory and expanded memory and extended memory and memory managers and emm386 and QEMM and clean w/none of them and on and on ......

....but the point I'm trying to make is that nothing worked. The shadow ram options NEEDED to be disabled before the flash utility would work. And I believe it was either my m/b's site or Award's site that gave me the info.

Quite right outpatient, your suggestion and experience with having to disable the shadow options in the BIOS is good advice and something that I had done also just to be on the safe side but surely was one of the options that helped my flash to be successful.
I forgot to mention that my advice was to be added to your suggestion also. By using both it would be possible to do the operation with as little hassle as possible.. /forum/smile.gif

You know everybody claims to be an expert on something at some time in their life but nobody here remembered that with gigs of memory available to all the new software it is the first 640K that really still matters..........
