I am building a system for a buddy at work - for his kids (read "first time buyer"). I needed an AGP video card quick and picked up a Savage4, 16MB AGP from Fry's for $59.

I looked at other cards but for the money this seemed like an okay deal. The card performs about as well as my 8MB Nvidia 128 PCI, perhaps a little better.

All in all it was not a bad deal and I think my buddy's kids will be very happy.

It only performs as good as a Riva128???? I sure wouldn't expect that - the Savage3D performs better than the Riva128 in every area (except perhaps 2D acceleration).

Other than that, it is a pretty good deal. I'll still take my ATI All in Wonder 128 from VA for $80 over it /forum/wink.gif

I got the Creative Blaster Savage 4 Pro and it kicks major ***. /forum/smile.gif I paid $100 for it at Best Buy.

Nice Deal if you ask me

Thanks for verifying that this was a good deal. It is a generic card using the Savage4.

Joel An All-in-wonder for $80 - no wonder you are satisfied!

Concerning the Nvidia 128, 8MB PCI cards; the benchmarks are really decent using the latest Nvidia reference drivers, to say the least. I have two 8MB cards using this chipset, an STB Velosity AGP, and a Viper330 PCI. Both perform nearly as well as my RIVA TNT 16MB AGP.

But if I had a little extra $$, which I don't right now, I would pick up a second Savage4 at that price.

Here is the deal my friend is getting for $350:

*K6-2 400 & noname AT AGP board using VIA chipset and onboard surround sound;
*64MB PC-100;
*4.3 Samsung (ho-hum) hard disk;
*12x CDROM (hey the 40x went in my daughter's machine);
*of course it has a floppy;
*Savage4 16MB AGP;
*2 USB ports;
*3Com 10/100 NIC;
*Best Data 33.6 ISA controler based modem (you guessed it - I put the new 56K in one of mine);
*Keyboard,Mouse,
Necessary Software + choice extras;

He buys monitor, speakers, & printer; I configure everything for him and provide emergency restore CD.

That is a fair deal isn't it?

BTW, After gaming on that machine for a while I must concede that, benchmarks aside, the Savage4 is a great card.

Bought my first CL 32MB PCI Savage 4 about 3 months ago for my kid's PII 300. So far, we've been very happy with it, & now I just ordered the AGP version for my other kid's PII 400, which is running a Voodoo 2. The Savage just flat outperforms the V2 and the price is right- so the kid gets an upgrade!
Lotta bang for the buck...

Ya done good, CMonster! /forum/wink.gif

Looks like you kept the best parts for yourself. Nice way to expose you from old components. You little rascal /forum/wink.gif.

How about a V3 for 50$?

I'm answering my own post just to say again what a B#^%*ing card this is for price! I'm jealous - in fact if I can find the BeOS driver for it I will give away the STB Velosity instead. Now Don't go giving me the driver from the BeOS website because it's not there anymore, the link is dead.
