Posted this over at Anands with no result. Anyone here got any Idea's
Really dont have any idea what could be happening.
Win 98 KX-2 400 128 meg ram Amptron MOBO-585B 6.4 WD HD.
A couple of days ago lost the HD due to NO FAT, found this in scandisk. Bios would then not see HD, Changed HD to master on IDE2 and my CD rom and CD RW on IDE 1, Bios sees the HD, Clean HD and reinstall OS and Netscape nothing else. Rebooted to reinstall modem, up and running, went to connect to internet, Keyboard quit, Mouse froze, had to reboot without Shutdown, BIOS again will not see HD. I have a 170 meg HD that I then put on the IDE cable and BIOS would not see this either. Does anyone know if there is a Virus that Writes to the BIOS to disable IDE detection? Is this just a MOBO failure? MOBO is only 3 months old. If it is a mb failure would it scramble the FAT? HD is new also. I am using a old 486 DX2-50 and man is it ever slow. Cant stand this very long.

There are BIOS viruses out there which is why there is a boot sector scan. I'd run a scan just to be safe, but I doubt that's your problem. As a rule, BIOS viruses are targetted and don't replicate - they just kill a system BIOS out-right. ( I.E. - if you have one - who last gave you a disk to put in your system or sent you an *.exe file in E-mail?)

Chances are, you simply have a bad BIOS EPROM chip - the mobo manufacturer would probably send you another one or offer to replace the entire board if you contacted them with your problem.

Have you tried different/new IDE cables? Also probably not it, but might save you a painfull exchange with the mobo manufacturer.

Good luck.

Axel:
Thank you very much for the reply. Did not get it By E-Mail as I will not open any attachments. No floppies from anyone. The last thing put on the machine was a small prog from C net. Still have it on a Zip disk. Going to copy it and send it by mail to them.
Got a new BIOS chip on the way.
