I have looked at the other posts regarding this issue, but have not found the answer yet.

I need to reload windows 2k, want to repair so I do not need to reload my apps. I have read the info on windows2000reinstall.com (i think that was the url on a similar post), but for some reason my pc will not boot to the windows 2k cd.

I changed the bios, and it detects the cd, t hen it says to press any key to boot from the cd, this does not work.

If it is the keyboard, then why would I be able to get into bios?

I also tried to download the startup disks to a floppy, but the link is dead.

If I decide to go to xp, should I just get an upgrade, or full edition?

Check the BIOS to make sure the CD is enabled. It should be if it detects the CD.

What kind of Win2K CD is it? Upgrade, OEM, or full install?

What errors do you get after pressing any key to boot from CD?

changed out the kb, able to do a manual repair. Seemed ok, now unable to load outlook express. Also, many programs that I try to start, loads the windows installer, seems like I had something like that happen before.

The error I get now is, outlook express could not be started because msoe.dll could not be loaded.

any ideas???

thanks for the input

oops, full install cd (my backup copy).

Getting some weird errors. Any way to purge all system files with windows repair? I remember doing it once before when my system was "buggy"

You need to try the Orginal CD.

All is good now, windows installer stopped its stuff, now I need to remap my drives.

I originally had my documents go to my "x" partition. Now my x drive was put at "d". Some of my apps are looking for the shortcuts leading to x. How can I change it back?

Edit each shortcut manually.

To change D: drive to X: drive, right click My Computer, choose Manage > Disk Management, right click on D: drive and choose "Change drive letter and path".

You have to reinstall SP4, the rollup and all subsequent updates after doing a Repair install. SP4 should fix the Windows installer problems.

Silly old me maybe but if 'boot from CD' doesn't work, Are you using a USB keyboard?

Happened to me a week or two back but I rang M$ and they have a list of boo boo s and that was one of 'em

actually that's common on Dells - BIOS default won't let you boot from a CD and use a USB keyboard unless it's enabled in the BIOS

learned the hard way after messing with one of our machines for 15 minutes - felt pretty stupid when I saw how easy the fix was :)

Yep, Dells won't boot from a USB keyboard and the CD. The USB controller is NOT enabled until AFTER you boot into an OS.

Try using a standard PS/2 keyboard.

Yes, that's the point I was making. It did happen to me, and like you, I felt a bit silly when I realised what had happened.

BUT it's not just Dell machines, my computer is a home brew machine using all standard components and an Abit mobo.
