Lately , in the past few weeks now, while playing CSS on Steam i eventually, get an error message or some sort.. saying the typ. " HL2 has encountered a problem and needs to close"
This happens almost two or three times a play shift... and I am kind of perplexed ove this.

In game any server plays fine for ong periods ,generally, and then every so often like after maybe two hours or whatever, my whole computer just freezes up while playing a game. There is not indication anything is wrong before or after.

Not being a true geek i suppose, the data strings are foriegn to me, and give me little clues.

Also, I am losing hope that Steam will ever fix the favorites menu to work right.

Beginning to think that uninstalling everything..and reinstalling might fix something but haven't a clue here.

I wouldn't use this forum to get response to this but like i said Vavle is not very responsive to thier customers with problems..on a personal level. ;)

If i exit and then re-enter... I am off and running and it plays for quite a while again with no problem. That is, until the upcoming error message or freeze up.

Its been pretty hot here in my new Apt. , and wonder if my computer is getting just too hot at times... ( possible i suppose ) or what.

Contacting Steam is pretty hopeless too... they never respond back or not for a long long time...

I just started having the same problem, I’m sick of emailing steam about it, i have sent I don’t know how many emails with the error attached. it happens every time I play CSS, I have looked just about every where for a fix I posted it on the Forums at steam, every fix they told me to try is worthless, if this is how steam/Valve approach there error and support problems they can kiss my fat ***, I have had my fill of steam I cant even enjoy a game but I get booted off and kicked because of this Hl.exe problem. I attached a pic below of the problem, is this the same one you’re getting?

That does sound like it might be heat if it is happening after a few hours of game play.

Have you tried playing with the side off your case to see if it is heat?

There is allot of people having this problem, its not heat related, nor is it driver related as far as I know and have red. I have 9 fans on my computer I OC every thing Video card Memory and Processor, so I decided to put every thing down to stock, still the same error, I removed the Video driver reinstalled it, still with the same error, I reinstalled Steam and all my apps still the same problem.

I ment for the OP that it might be heat and to try it without the case side on just to see.

As you know it will get pretty hot inside the case after long periods of gaming, overclocking or not. :)

You really can't group all PCs into one group that it is all the same problem and reason etc.

My game doesn't even give me errors, It just crashes me back to the desktop. I've never had this problem in the past and suspect it may have something to do with the recent update that was released.

Boy.. am I glad at least to know that it is not me.... In all relaity... I felt all along that othing was basicly wrong with my system.. install or whatnot...
Generally everything except the favorites thing works fine for the most part.

The last update i really was excited before runnng it..,thinking that they would aknowledge or fix this issue ...,as it seems from yu guys reports.., that others and probably lots of players have the same issues.

The most important things to them is like everything else.. in our free market money grabbing society... 'Market as many games as they can... and to heck with the rest..' I beleive they suspect and know how popular this game and thier franchise is... . That does not mean that we are all just dummies..and will gobble up thier new ventures. MOst will I suppose.

It is nice however that there is such a wide range of mods and maps..put out by players and Valve...

The other night I tried once again to email them.. and the darn email would not even go through.. and just forgot it... Again.. last night i reported the same in the bug menu choice in the Steam menu and it went through.. So.., we will see if they ever respond or just use the info for thier own purposes..and leave us all hanging.

Rabbit I found this and ran it and this seems to have corrected my problem, some people are saying its a bad Dll file some where in windows Im not sure if thats the case but as i said it seems to have worked for me after a some time digging round the net I might add, also before doing this try and update your directX if you havent tried it all ready, GoodLuck, let me know if it works for you.

The System File Checker (SFC) tool is a command-line tool that can be used to restore protected system files on your computer by using the backup versions that are stored in the Dllcache folder, or files copied from the Windows XP installation source.

Protected file types include those with .sys, .dll, .exe, .ttf, .fon and .ocx file name extensions.

You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to be allowed to run System File Checker.

System File Checker Tool Syntax

/Scannow: Scans all protected system files immediately and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. This command may require access to the Windows installation source files.
/Scanonce: Scans all protected system files one time when you restart your computer. This command may require access to the Windows installation source files when you restart the computer.
/Scanboot: Scans all protected system files every time you start your computer. This command may require access to the Windows installation source files every time you start your computer.
/Revert: Returns SFC to the default setting (do not scan protected files when you start the computer). The default cache size is not reset when you run this command.
/Purgecache: Purges the file cache and scans all protected system files immediately. This command may require access to the Windows installation source files.
/Cachesize=x: Sets the file cache size to x megabytes (MB). The default size of the cache is 50 MB. This command requires you to restart the computer, and then run the /purgecache command to adjust the size of the on-disk cache

To start using SFC, go to Start > Run, and type cmd in the Open box, then click OK to open a command prompt. Here you can using the command sfc with any of the switches indicated above (most of the time you'll be using sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc).

When you start SFC, you may see the following prompt several times during the process:

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/img/sfc-1.png

What you can do to eliminate this is to copy the I386 folder from your Windows XP CD to your hard drive. Just copy the whole folder to your hard drive. Note that it'll take some 500 MB in size, but with today's large hard drives this shouldn't be a problem. If you didn't get a Windows CD when you purchased your computer, it is likely that this folder will already be on your hard drive.

The next step is to let Windows know where to find the files. Follow these steps:

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Setup
Double click the value SourcePath in the right pane, and enter the location where you copied the I386 folder (probably you copied the folder in the root of your C drive, thus the value would be C:\.
Close the registry editor, and log off from Windows, or restart your computer for the setting to take effect.

Windows will keep track of updated system files that are introduced through the "normal" channels, such as Windows Update, Windows Service Pack installation using Update.exe, Hotfixes installed using Hotfix.exe or Update.exe and Operating system upgrades using Winnt32.exe.

The System File Checker tool is part of Windows XP's file protection, for more information read Microsoft Knowledge Base article 222193: Description of the Windows File Protection Feature.

Thanks CC... Thats a lot of stuff to manipulate thjough... just for this game...

You explained things just fine... I am not too keen on modifiying anything... but there it is.. like your good info and link states...

I'm sure it has to do with some sort of updates...by them or MS....

Right now i just list alphabetically...and i can alawys find what i am loking for in secs. .. Its just that i have to refresh or wait till all the servers are listed until i an pick and choose.. and that takes the longest time.. If the favorites worked like before..then all i would have to do is immed. hit 'Favorites' and not have to wait.

I 'm sure i sound like some sort of rag to some people.... but this still makes me mad Valve ..Steam has not acknowledged the problem or ficed it... and thqat urks me more than getting a quick fix from a third party.... What a a world...

Hows life in merry England??

Have you tried uninstalling the Game and reinstalling it?

It sounds like the problem is local to your machine.

It really sounds to me like local corruption on your PC.

I would try an completely remove HL2, CS, Stream etc and reinstall getting fresh updates etc.

Make sure to Delete the Program folders Completely too.

I am sure what you mean by a lot becuase I went to the CS Forums and didn't see that many people that had the problems you do.

Yes I was taking about CS Source. :)

I went to the Stream and CSS forums to look.

I am glad you got it worked out. :)

Having to replace .dll files means something got corrupted some how.

Wonder what the problem really was, because it wasn't really wide spread.

This IS getting quite interesting and irritating isn't it?

I agree on what you said..TOTALLY!

Heres my view on updates as a whole.... : Using an example... "say you have a car and it runs perfect. But... because you either are a perfectionist or just never happy with anything... you decide to tinker with it some more. you go to start it up and find that it seems to not run as well as before..
Get the point?

In the case of a computer..., it is just that the more code written and the more things involved and incorporated...., upon reflection it seems just natural that not ALL things might work together or be compatible.

Origiinally (I when the game and Steam were introduced ) I thought they were geniuses. Everything seemed to worked fine and I can remember then also...

Since all the updates... of which most are for modders..or people with the highest end machines...and those who like to manipulate anything and everything..., its my opinion also that the game ran better at the start then all the various blitches i get now.
Like you.., I have had boxes up up that say unknown user.., disconnected for whatever.., and other things like the menu /internet listings.. having the top all bunched up. before .., it was aligned and spread out. Another quirk of having to space eveything... ( more time comsumptoin and trouble )

One positive is that i have not had the freezing or disconnects like before.( we'll see )

Another thing for me is my server i like the most does not record my kills at a acceptable level. One third are never registering... Link! I don't know..

Actually, my feelings are I NEVER KNOW and that is just what irritates me... They have the power and we like to play period.

Even though like i said before.. i apreciated you r fix or links and info above, I am in the mindset of Never wasting more of my time fixing thier game for them. Not my job. We all have other things to do ..don't we??

I have a question for you. On one site i dl'ed some map packs and i get sonfused with all the simialr named foldrs where to put them and if i need to totally extract them into that folder ..so when loading a server or a mp change in the game .., it does not have to take extra time or say... i do not have it... and disconnect.

Take heart.. its never going to get better ever.... just more stuff added

I may like thier games alot.. but the foundr Gabe Newell must be some sort of runaway machine LOL

So how did you fix it? i'm still getting this problem with the datacache.dll.

Rabbitrunner51
06-28-2006, 01:13 AM
Ankerson... I like your input and articulate responses...,but quite frankly.., if CC and I have this problems(s) and obviously others..then why do the files get corrupted in the first place.. This just does not add up.

Remember that this all started with the last updates.. before for me..my favorites worked fine..and were there when exiting the game. Now nothinbg works at al there.. i bring up the internet listings and just alphabetize and search.
Since i usually only play on two or three servers most all the time.. it works for me.. but like us all , we want the program to work like it is supposed to. Nothing is corrupt as far as i know in my computer ( which is amazing )

Obviously, it is a error with the Steam update. This has by the way happened at least twice before . HELLO! anybody listening??

I have spent like five times at least wrting to them emails..and only once after like three weeks di they respond with an answer that can only be described as we are all stupid or something ( sarcasm there ).

The trouble with alot of these users that work for them on the other end is that like most geeks they have trouble ansering a simple question or even maybe fixing the problem so that we do not have to waste our time endlessly ,while they just put out more updates??

CSS is probably one of the two most popular online games players play period.

Funny that like i stated above, the gamne worked fine and menus and all included , right after the game came out..and now it is buggy in spots.

I too occasionally get those samew error messages like user account is not accessable or some such.. and even freeze ups. Upon re-entering all is well...
Suppose that is just the price for all the updates and typical computer add-ins. So many things to incorporate and blend into the system.

The only fix i can see for me is to do what you suggested.., and that is un-install everything and re-install. Something tells me that will work.

One problem is that thier ways of putting so many differnt folders within folders... seems like a sure fire receipe for corruptions or other... Don't you think??

not to end on a negative note.. let me say that it does work for me and that makes me happy for the most part.. soo..... the other can wait as too many other fish to fry. LOL

But see it does add up because there wasn't a lot of people having that problem (I checked all the proper sites).

Any file can get corrupted for different reasons on any computer.

The problem was a very limited issue on a very small number of PCs.

I guess its pointless to wonder how it got corrupted?? it leaves one wondering just what us small percentage of us did or had configured wrong or whatever.

Is this a registry issue?? While i have long since ..not ran or used any registry cleaners..( for any similar issues ..like I had yesteryear after runniing them ), its quite possible that i did run one at some time...
Every so often i try out something... like a reg cleaner..and this is just the reason i quite using them.

What specific forums did you visit ...so maybe i ccan read what others have to say??

I really don't believe it was your fault, from what I got out of all of it was there was a corrupt file that was downloaded by a small group of players that caused the problem.

The forums where the CS Source forums and the Valve Forums.

I really didn't find much at all on those and I did play CS Source for awhile on different servers and checked a bunch of them and there was a ton of people playing so it wasn't a wide spread problem.

OK.. The only thing thqt does not work in the game is the Favorties menu. The game on any server runs and plays great for the most part.

Some day I will just do a re-install... And.. depending upon whether I get a current personal issue I've got going with my login and user interface, it just might be sooner than later..depending. Doing a re-install and waiting for the updates and all, that takes a few hours.. so I will just put it off until I do a clean intall of my OS someday. None of us wants to do that when everything else in our computers runs fine if not great...

Funny, but the only game of all the games they have out related to HL and HL2 I play is CSS.
I still want to pick up DOD Source as I do not have that yet.. LOL
