I upgraded a computer for a friend. New hard drive, k62-450, and 32 more megs of ram. The mobo is a ASUS P5A-B the hard drive is a fugitsu 13.6 gig. Heres what's funny the computer worked fine after I finished with the upgrades windows went on fine and started up great. The machine was fast I reinstalled all his programs and everything still worked great. When his girl friend came over to get it I hooked it up and showed her how good it ran it performed fantasticly. So she left with it he hooked it up on Friday night and it didn't work. According to him it goes throught the normal boot process then he gets the windows splash screen and then nothing. He says the color bar on the bottom of the splash screen is still moving but thats all it will do. He is going to bring it back today for me to try to fix but I need a starting place any ideas. Ps this isn't the first computer I have worked on. But this is the first one that has done this. Thanks for any help you can offer... Butch

She left with it...

Have him check to see that some cables or cards came loose during the move. Try reseating and replugging everything. It may be that simple.

He brought the computer back and everything worked fine just as it did when it left here. I told him to try just plugging in the monitor, mouse and keyboard then see what happens. Then add the remaining hardware one at a time. There was nothing loose rechecked everything, beats me. I told him if it doesn't work this time bring everything back and I'll set it up. Thanks for the help... Butch /forum/smile.gif

Does it have an internal Zip 100 drive? I have one, if i leave a zip disk in it at starrtup it causes windows to take forever to boot up (seems like a lockup though cause it takes FOREVER!)

If it doesn't work at his house, and it works at yours, it may be something in his house. Has he placed it near anything not magnetically shielded? I've also heard strange tales of outlets in houses and other things that I can't remember. Was this or any computer running in his house, from the same location, before?

Tell your friend to put a meter on the outlet he's plugging into ,to make sure he has a good solid ground connection. It's posible if there is another device on that circuit that has a problem , the neutral is acting as a ground since it's connected at the meter base drawing down the whole circuit
Anytime the ground does not have continuity
anything is possble. Just a thought. Good luck /forum/smile.gif

You might also want to ask them what other items they might be plugging into the computer. such as Printers, Palm pilots, Scanners, Joysticks, USB devices (speakers, Camera, ect) As with the "blue line" still moving the system is not fully locked up and maybe "looking" for plug and play items to setup.

Well he took the computer home and it did the same thing nothing. he installed a new monitor, keyboard and mouse and it did nothing again. He said he checked his power outlets and they were good. He had a problem with the system before I upgraded it, it would reboot itself frequently. I hooked it up before I worked on it and it didn't do it for me here. Sounds to me that there is a problem at his place but I don't know what.

Gremlins......<shew> they can be a pain.

Seriously, if the win98 splash screen bar is still moving, then the machine is likely not totally locked up.....so press the esc (escape) key to get rid of the splash screen, and see if you can tell what (if anything) is going on "behind the scenes". Maybe it will give you/us some clues we can go on.

Your not going to belive this the computer is fixed and running great at his house. It was the mouse for some reason the computer didn't like his PS2 mouse. It liked mine just fine. He took the computer to COMPUSA they ran a diagnostic on it with his equipment on it and found the problem.I'm glad it was none of the hardware I installed. When he brought it back for me too look at it the other day he only brought the computer by it's self. I used my keyboard and mouse and it worked great here who would have thought.. Thanks for all the help.... Butch /forum/smile.gif
