Everytime I try to Defrag my drive and when it reaches 10% it started all over again. I have no other program running on the backgroud. Icq is close too, end tasked everything except expoler and systray. So I was wondering if anyone out here can help me out? Thanks alot
www.symantec.com (http://www.symantec.com) has a utility somewhere on their site that will tell you what program is writing to the disk. i can't remember where it is, but if you look under support for norton utilities 3.0, go in the knowledge database, and check for speed disk (norton's defrag) you should find it.
Try running Scandisk first.

Also, make sure your screen saver is shut off.
Use the ctrl, alt, del buttons to bring up the close program menu. From there turn off everything but systray and explorer. Then turn off your screensaver and start your defrag.

That sounds actually OK. With my HD, a 3.5 Uuantum, the defrag process takes about 1 hour! It goes up to 10, then starts all over again. But evetually it is defraged.

Sometimes I find that Windows defrag can take up to 9 hours to do my 3.2GB disk. This is crazy. I got tired of it taking that long, so now I am using Nortons Speed Disk, the job is done in 1-2 hours, and its done right. Why does Windows defragmenter screw around like that, I don't know.

I'm running WIN98,& using Speed Disk silkman, so it works great. If you have an early version of Nortons, like Version 2.0, you will have to download an upgrade patch for the program to work correctly with Win98, but after that its fine.

silkman: Make sure you disable any virus programs, I had to disable Mcafee 4.03 to run scandisk on my system.
