Hi,

I'm having a problem with a W2k DC transferring files very slowly from itself (lets call it "X") to other machines, if the transfer is initiated by the other machine. For instance, if I request a copy of a 100M file from "X" from another machine it takes about 3min. If I initiate the copy of the same file from "X" to the same recipient it only takes about 20 sec.

The machine is a Dell SC430 P4, 2.8Ghz, 1G RAM, integrated Broadcom 5751 Gigabit NIC. I've tried using a different NIC (3Com 3c905), which didn't change anything. It's connected to a Netgear 10/100 unmanaged switch. I have another, almost identical W2K DC (Dell SC420 - same Broadcom NIC) connected to the same switch that doesn't have this problem.

One other issue I'm having with "X", and I bring it up because it may be related, is that after a reboot it can browse the LAN very fast (instantly), but after some time, about 12-24 hours, browsing becomes very slow, on the order of 90 sec to bring up the network neighborhood window. I've disabled the Computer Browser service on this machine. It is running on the other DC.

Server "X" is configured for many tasks, for instance it's a RAS, DNS and WINS server. It also runs email and a web proxy server programs. Everything with those services and apps seems to be working fine. Since it doesn't appear to be an issue with the NIC, I assume the problem is in the configuration of all the different services.

Hope this all makes some sense.

Does this sound like anything anyone can give me hand with?

Thanks in advance.

It amy be as simple as resetting your router/switch. I had a router that caused this problem once. I had to replace it.

Hi Bill, thanks for the reply.

I shut the switch down for a few seconds and brought it back up. No joy.

Also, changed the port I was connected to. Didn't help either.

Well, as I said, I had to replace mine.

I have seen a bad hub/switch/router also cause the same problems.

We replaced that one also.
